The Game Boy - From Ancient History to Fashion Accessory!

Dec 27, 2006

Nintendo's Game Boy first came out 17 years ago. It was big, clunky and only gamers had them. Now the Game Boy is a sleek, stylish fashion accessory that's showing up in the hands of celebrities like Paris Hilton, Good Charlotte and the Beastie Boys. Check out the rise of the Game Boy, from its awkward early years to today's cool gaming gadget!

1989 - The Nintendo Game Boy

The Nintendo Game Boy. Chunky, clunky, and with a black and white screen, the original Nintendo Gameboy was massive. It was cutting edge at the time though, and you could play Tetris on it! Even though carrying one was like wearing an "I'm a nerd!" T-shirt, the Nintendo Game Boy was the best way to play games on the go.

1995 - The Game Boy Gets Color

The Nintendo Game Boy. In 1995, Nintendo's Play it Loud! special event brought a splash of color to the Game Boy with black, clear, green, red and yellow cases. The Game Boy didn't change, but it got a sudden dose of style!

1996 - The Game Boy Pocket

The Nintendo Game Boy Pocket. In '96, Nintendo lightened the load for Game Boy fans by releasing the smaller, lighter Game Boy Pocket. It also upgraded the black and white screen to make it crisper, cleaner and easier to see.

1998 - The Game Boy Color

The Nintendo Game Boy Color. The first serious upgrade to the Game Boy came with the Game Boy Color. Not only was it a more powerful gaming system, it was smaller, lighter and the games were in color! A major bonus was that the GBC could play all the old black and white Game Boy games. Nintendo also smartened up to the growing number of fashion-conscious gamers and released different colored GBC systems right away.
