Does Watch Dogs 2 Have A New Protagonist?
Several rumors have been moving around Watch Dogs 2 in 2016 but we now have our most believable piece of news yet. Aiden Pearce, the protagonist from the last game seems out, and we may have our first look at a new protagonist in the series.
Cort King posted a picture of the new character that he was presumably playing on a motion capture stage. The character is dressed similarly to Pearce from the previous games, so we could assume that Pearce is somewhat involved in this new world. Though things are definitely changing up for the series it's more than likely for the better. Watch Dogs was notoriously disappointing for hyped up gamers and while the game wasn't that bad it certainly wasn't as innovative as its marketing hyped it up to be. Additionally, many critics took issue with the game's main character and often criticized him for having an uninteresting personality.
For the uninformed, Watch Dogs took place in Chicago. Players took control of Aiden Pearce, a hacker, who could take control of the city's connected electronics including: cameras, traffic lights, cell phones, and ATM's. Chicago was chosen as it is such an interconnected city and rumors have spread of San Fransisco being the playground for Watch Dogs 2. Assuming the core themes are the same, this would be an interesting location to make use of the California tech industry that thrives in the city.
Watch Dogs 2 has been speculated for a 2016 release and to take up a sizeable portion of Ubisoft's E3 conference this year. A massive criticism of Watch Dogs' original release was the amount of time between its announcement, several delays, and evential release. With the success of recent games shortening the gap between reveal and release, it wouldn't be out of this world to assume Watch Dogs 2 could maybe ditch the long wait and actually release the game within a shorter time frame of its announcement.
Regardless of how you felt about the first game, it looks like Aiden Pearce is out and our new mystery man is in. We'll keep an eye open for any leaks concerning the new game but I would expect an official reveal in just a month at Ubisoft's E3 conference on Monday, June 13th.
