British Beginnings
Joseph was born in England on May 16, 1981 but was raised on the island of Wales. From a young age he was interested in theater, and studied at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. His very first audition was for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but he wasn’t successful.
Joseph’s first major role was in 2004 as Troy on the TV series Hex. The show was made in the UK and focused on a girl who had dangerous powers. After appearing in a handful of episodes, he moved onto other TV movies and TV mini-series.
Klaus
In 2011 Joseph got his big break when he was cast in The Vampire Diaries as Klaus. Klaus is an original vampire who has a deep connection with Stefan, Damon and Katherine. What sets him apart from his siblings, Elijah and Rebekah, is that Klaus is a hybrid – a cross between a vampire and a werewolf! Joseph’s character has had such a great response on the show that The CW has offered him his own show called The Originals. The show will focus on the original vampire family.
