This week on American Idol (Season 12, Week 3), the judges head to San Antonio, Texas, and Long Beach, California. Read Kidzworld’s recap of “Audition #5,” which aired on January 30, 2013 to discover what you missed.
Last night, the judges made two stops on their audition tour: San Antonio, Texas, and Long Beach, California. It seems the standard for excellence is higher this season, with so many incredible powerhouse voices.
San Antonio Auditions
In San Antonio, the judges met some surprising talents including 19-year-old Adam Sanders, who came off as nervous and awkward, but delivered with a powerful soulful voice that earned him a standing ovation from the judges. They also met a unique character who goes by the name Papa Peaches. He sang an original song for the judges that captivated Nicki, but left the rest of the panel on the fence. After receiving two yeses and two nos, Randy Jackson had to break the tie. Given that his original vote was no, you'd think he would have sent Papa Peaches packing. But he gave in to Nicki's incessant begging and offered him the golden ticket. He may be strange, but he deserved a shot!
Long Beach Auditions
In Long Beach, the day started off a bit strange when Mariah Carey was stuck in the crazy California traffic and Nicki Minaj was at a prior commitment. The first few contestants auditioned for just the male judges. There we met some lovely contestants with touching stories. Micah Johnson has nerve damage that affects his speech, yet somehow he managed to deliver a powerful audition. Briana Oakley appeared on the talk show Maury at age 12 for an episode about talented kids. Her moment in the spotlight was short lived when she returned home and was bullied by her peers to the point where she had to change schools. Now, at age 16, Briana is ready to try again. She sang like she's been in the business for years. There's no doubt she'll make it far in this competition. The last contestant to audition was 21-year-old Mattheus Fernandes. There's no medical reason why he's so short, according to several doctors. But his height made his powerful vocals all the more moving.
Oklahoma City Auditions
On Thursday night, the Oklahoma City auditions brought Nate Tao. Both of his parents are deaf, so neither of them know whether Nate has actual talent. Receiving a golden ticket showed them that their son can really shine. We also met 16-year-old Kayden Stephenson, who battles with cystic fibrosis. With an estimated lifespan of only 35 years, Kayden lives every day to the fullest.
