Jay Hernandez grew up in Montebello, California. Jay Hernandez was discovered by talent agent, Howard Tyner, while riding in the elevator of a Hollywood highrise. The well-known manager thought that Jay had star qualities and suggested that he try acting.
Jay Hernandez: Hang Time
After taking the talent agent up on his advice, Jay Hernandez landed his first acting role playing Antonio Lopez on an NBC Saturday morning basketball sitcom, Hang Time. Hernandez's character was instantly popular and the role lasted two years. Jay Hernandez went on to co-star in the TV show Living the Life but it didn't get a lot of exposure.

Jay Hernandez's biggest break came when he landed the male lead in the teen angst flick Crazy/Beautiful, starring Kirsten Dunst and Taryn Manning. Hernandez played Carlos Nunez, the good but poor Latino boy who falls for the upper class bad girl, played by Dunst. Jay Hernandez followed the role up with parts in The Rookie, Joy Ride and Torque.
