I know that it might seem like a long time before now, but before you know it, you will be picking out classes for your post-secondary education. It might not be happening right this second, but it is down the line. It's never hurtful to look ahead to the future. The question is, have you given any thought as to what you might want to do when you grow up? Maybe it's not the time yet, but time sure keeps on ticking and passing us by. It might be a good idea to start to think about what you want to do and what you feel you might be good at.
What are your passions?
Start off by thinking of all the things that you love to do. Is there potential for a career there? If so, explore it. If not, go back to the drawing board and keep brainstorming. Think of some things that you would enjoy doing as a profession. Keep in mind that some jobs require more school than others. For example, if you want to be a doctor or a lawyer then that is a lot of school ahead of you. A lot of jobs require going to school and getting more than just a Bachelor's degree. This is an important thing to look into, how long will take me to get my dream job? Not to mention these programs are competitive, a lot of students want to get into them. Therefore, you have to do a lot of volunteering and ensuring that your grade point average is very high. At the end, it will come down to you as they generally interview students at this stage.
What are you good at?
A lot of the time we do something a lot, but don't even recognize that it is a hobby. Sometimes that hobby is actually a talent. I know a girl who loved to write, everyday she would write in her journal just because she liked to clear her thoughts. One day she was assigned a writing assignment for English class, she did the homework without thought, but then when it came time to give the assignments back, the teacher read the girl's submission out to the class saying it was great writing. Suddenly, this girl knew that her hobby was actually a passion. Has anything like this ever happened to you? Has a teacher brought skills of yours to your attention? In this case, this also might be an area you want to follow. If you've already been deemed as good at it, and you enjoy it then it couldn't hurt.
What Do You Want to Do?
If you really want to be something, you should let nothing and no one stand in your way. You should do whatever it takes to make your dream a reality. Don't give up on your dreams because they seem hard. If it was easy, everyone would do it. It's supposed to be hard, and you are more prepared for the challenge then you think. Seriously, if there is something you want to be, but you think it is too hard or too much work, don't give up. Anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Hard work really does pay off so don't let anyone tell you that you can't. Also, don't listen to people who are negative about your dream. You know how bad you want it and how hard you are willing to work for it, what other people think doesn't matter.
If you really want to make something happen, you will face every obstacle along the way until you get there. If you don't know what you want to do yet, that is perfectly okay. Take your time. Your young and you are figuring out what you like. You are exploring. Continue to explore, try some new classes and see what it is that you like the most. The best way to figure out what you like is to try new things. Challenge yourself. You never know what you will uncover.
