Do you already know what you want to be when you grow up? Have you already given it some thought? If so, have you been looking into what kind of education you will have to complete in order to achieve your goals? It’s useful to look into this stuff now so you can prepare yourself for your futures. Career counselors are a great help with this if they have them at your school.
Sometimes we may want to be something, but not know the amount of education or outside work it requires. Regardless, if there Is something that you really want to be, education will not stand in your way. You will willingly complete it because that profession means that much to you.
You do have to build a solid foundation in order to make these goals a reality. Some kids and teens start at a young age to ensure they will surpass the competition. Despite the constant itch to be popular, some kids are more focused on their futures and their studies. No matter what intrigues you, there are ways to help you meet your mark.
What does that look like?
For starters, if you wanted to be a doctor and knew for certain this was your desired profession, you would probably pay attention to your grades (particularly if you are graduating), but you would also have to take part in extracurricular activities. In addition to this, you might also want to volunteer in the community somewhere. Pick a place that compliments the occupation you are after.
It is known that you can’t just have good marks these days, learning is also hands on. You also have to have an impressive profile and learn what you can about working in that field.
What can I do to prepare for what I want?
Be active and academic. Take part in school teams, try out for student counsel, play sports, simply be exceptional all around. Become a contender for valedictorian or try to be, express interest in the role. Pay service where you can and help out where you can and ensure that your actions are rewarded. Students who are highly involved in the betterment of the school’s community are often acknowledged by awards, or at least excellence in any area or subject is generally awarded.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Speak up in class. Make yourself known. Form relationships with your teachers. Talk to them and find out how you can improve on your work. Go to them with your ideas and seek their guidance. It is very important to interact with your teacher so that he/she can ensure that you are making waves, and doing the work up to the right standard.
In addition to this, do things outside of school. Take up an instrument outside of band or take on any other hobby which enables you to shine. Try to make yourself a part of the community or get to a point where you feel like you are a part of your community.
Figure out where you are strong and excel there, but also figure out what you love and give it everything you got.
What will stand in my way?
Becoming too social could be dangerous. You don’t want to put your friends in front of your future. It’s okay to hang out, and healthy to take breaks, but you can’t let your social life interfere with your studies. You have to make school a priority.
Another thing that will stand in your way is your lack of faith in yourself, if you so chose to have it. A lack of confidence could also stand in your way. You have to really want it and know that you can do it. You have to believe in yourself and want to do the work even when it gets taxing. If you really set your mind to it, anything is possible and with the right outlook you are even more likely to succeed. Try to retain a positive attitude.
What could go wrong?
We make plans for ourselves, but they often fall through. There’s a chance it might not work out the way you planned. You could go for Cheerleading and be rejected. You could try to build your profile and be rejected. This is okay and rejection is a part of the process. Focus on the places where you are exceling and get help with the things you need to improve on.
Frustrated because you have no idea what you want to do?
Don’t worry. You are still so young and have no idea what is ahead of you. You aren’t meant to have an idea, but if you do, that’s great.
Pay attention to your life and what excites you. You will figure out what your forte is. Sometimes it just takes times, but never get to the point in thinking you excel at nothing because this isn’t true. You simply have to find your place, and you will, it just comes easier to some than others so hang in there.
Regardless, keep working towards your goals. Keep in mind what you might want to do, and start chipping away at it. The future is in your hands, but you do have time to figure it out, though it is wise and useful to start to think about it.
