Nintendo gives us our first glance at Yoshi's newest story.
Jan 23, 2019By: Max Cannon
With the long lineage of Yoshi games on Nintendo consoles, it was just a matter of time until we saw one on the Nintendo Switch -- Nintendo's most popular console yet! After an announcement in 2017 for a project simply referred to as "Yoshi for Nintendo Switch," 2018 gave us the official title of Yoshi's Crafted World which is releasing just a few months into 2019!
Another Yoshi Story
Yoshi games are known for their distinct art style. Yoshi's Island on the Super Nintendo made use of a special chip called the Super FX to boost visuals, Yoshi's Story on the Nintendo 64 was one of the first 2.5D games on the machine, and the recent releases of Yoshi's Woolly World gave everything a soft looking texture that nailed that the promise from that title. So how are things looking in Yoshi's Crafted World? Well, it looks somewhat similar to Woolly World but with more of an "arts-and-crafts" type of style. The world appears to be made of cardboard and inhabited by plushie characters including Yoshi himself.
Also, as it Yoshi-game tradition, it seems like Baby Bowser, aka Bowser Jr, is returning as the villain alongside the wizard Kamek. These baddies appear in the brief story trailer as they cause chaos by shattering the Yoshi's Sundream Stone into pieces and casting the lovable dinosaurs from their home onto some nearby islands. Check out the scene for yourself -- which seems like it may actually be the game's opening cutscene -- in the trailer we've shared below.
Yoshi’s Crafted World - Story Trailer
What exactly is going on? Here's the summary of the story in Nintendo's own words:
"It all started when Kamek and Baby Bowser set out to steal a gem-set stone. Legend has it that this fabled artifact can grant the bearer their wildest dreams! But when the artifact’s gems are sent flying, it falls upon Yoshi and friends to find them. Luckily, saving the day can be cooperative and challenging. As Yoshi, you’ll leap up high, gulp down enemies, and set out on a treasure hunt to find all the different collectables. On the flip side, stages can be played backwards, providing new perspectives to explore and new ways to locate some of the more craftily hidden items!"
When Can You Play?
Yoshi's Crafted World is launching exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on March 29th! If you're looking for any other sort of cutesy platformer to play then March will definitely have you covered! Kirby's Epic Yarn, which originally launched back on the Nintendo Wii, is coming to the Nintendo 3DS on March 8th as Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn and bringing in a bit of new content that wasn't available in the game's original version. So if you haven't made the upgrade from the 3DS to the Switch then you don't have to miss out on all of that Nintendo gaming goodness!
