Xbox and Disney recently unveiled Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure and Disneyland Adventures their latest games on Microsoft’s gaming console just in time for the holidays.
At a Xbox and Disney hosted event we were able to preview the games and demo them for gameplay that’s great for the whole family this upcoming gift giving season with creators Jorg Neumann (Head of Production, Microsoft Studios) and John Dongelmans (Marketing Director, 1st Party Games) to give us an inside look at what's exciting and new over at Disney games.
Here are some fun facts and features in the games developers had in mind that are sure to please any Disney•Pixar fan out there.
Rush: A Disney•Pixar Adventure
- Rush initially started as a Mario Cart-like game but Pixar wanted to expand into more of a story based game.
- Pixar Director Pete Doctor came up with the idea to “make it a park” inspired by a real park at Pixar studios that creatives and their families regularly visit.
- The game play encourages players to make friends in this digital version of a park that creatively includes worlds from some of the studio's most popular films. Through the sandbox you can visit the universes of Cars (I&II), UP, Ratatouille, Finding Dory, Toy Story (I&II).
- Along with popular characters you can fulfill story inspired activities to collect coins and explore those worlds. You can swim as Nemo or Squirt. Run around the kitchen as Remy and team up with Woody for a daycare escape.
- Ellen Degeneres and Tom Hanks reprise their roles among others in the game.
- It’s expansive! Within the 6 movie game you can in 18 world levels inspired by familiar places but go on new adventures.
- From swimming through the Great Barrier Reef to high octane international landscape car racing, the game is filled with action set pieces like in the movies!
- The developers had access to all of Pixar’s catalogue to be true to the film universes and create a game that fanatics would be very happy with.
- The game still works with Kinect but now is PC & controller compatible.
- You can enable cooperative play for multiplayer fun for the family on the same screen with split-screen capabilities
Disneyland Adventures:
-
You can take the magic of visiting a Disney theme park home with this unique experience of Walt Disney’s Disneyland.
- Game play takes players out for a day at the park, no nighttime version yet but you get to explore every land and iconic rides. You can, however, conduct your own fireworks show!
- You go around collecting character signatures and taking pics as you make your way to the rides. Some characters will give you quests to go on to take you around the park in a cool way to collect items and see awesome surprises.
- The dark ride feature is thankfully not just watching your character experience the ride like you would in real life but instead take the storylines from the rides and makes them playable levels.
- Interactive ride features include flying through London with Peter Pan on Peter Pan’s flight and floating like a ghost on the Haunted Mansion to find a way out to mountain top exploring on the Matterhorn.
- Some rides have long wait times(sort of like the real world) and take a while to load but it’s worth the wait for rides that have multiple mini-games that build upon the rides in new and creative ways to play in those worlds.
- Developers were allowed to work with filmmakers, imagineers and refer to the Disney archives to expand on the Dark Ride worlds as authentically as possible. Every shot, object and landscape is movie/ride universe accurate.
- There are hidden Mickeys! All the theme park ones and some created specifically for this game!
- There are in total 18 Dark Rides you can play. There’s no Indiana Jones or Star Tours yet in the game. This was in development before Disney acquired Lucasfilm but look forward to future expansions and DLC possibilities. Even the idea to visit the park at night and other eras is something developers hope to make available for Disney fanatics who hope to revisit Yesterland rides that aren’t at the parks anymore.
- The coins you collect on the games can go toward shopping at stores based on real park store locations like Le Bat en Rouge and Main Street USA. You can buy hats, costumes and more like you would on a real day out at the park. Costumes include classic character looks from the Disney Princesses as well as Pixar characters. And of course there are theme park souvenir specific items.
- The options given to build your avatar are expansive and help to personify you in the world of the game or your inner child for us big kids who love the parks. Everything from your hair to the color of your pants and accessories, you can find your Disney style. Hopefully they’ll also add Dapper Day DLC outfit options too! That would be awesome.
- The game is still playable on Kinect.
