Some high quality games came out in 2016 but we have a lot to look forward to in 2017. Some long gestating games are finally releasing this year and some new ways to play are really going to shine. Check out what has us most excited in 2017!
1. New Consoles
Well, not really new games but new ways to play! VR games will release and hit their full stride this year, particularly on PlayStation VR. But we also will have our first look at the next evolution of the Xbox One with Project Scorpio. The Scorpio is going to be similar to the PlayStation 4 Pro in that it isn't fully replacing the Xbox One and Xbox One S, but the new console will be more of a half-step. Microsoft announced that console will run games at Native 4K, higher framerates, and be very, very powerful. We still haven't seen the console, though it was initially announced at E3 2016, but it'll be releasing during the holidays later this year.
We also have the Nintendo Switch destined for store shelves in just a few months. Rumors are sounding off about a March 2017 release with a new Zelda launching alongside it. Nintendo has announced a reveal of the console next week on January 12th.
2. Horizon: Zero Dawn
Oh, what a pretty looking game. Horizon: Zero Dawn was first shown off during E3 2014 and is created by Guerilla Games who are most known for the Killzone games. An open world RPG in a futuristic world with dinosaur robots - a pretty video gamey plot if I've ever heard of one. We've seen a couple demos but I feel like Sony has done a great job at keeping tight lipped when it comes to the games plot.
Playing as a female protagonist named Alloy, the game seems to control well and gives off more of a third person vibe than an RPG. One of the prettiest games I've ever seen with some fresh looking gameplay? This game looks like a quality way to start out 2017.

3. Mass Effect: Andromeda
Recently confirmed for a release on March 21st, Mass Effect: Andromeda is the 4th game in the beloved Mass Effect series. A game of open world space exploration, players will be jumping around from planet to planet in another RPG. Unlike Horizon, this seems to control a little closer to your standard RPG experience.
Though EA has initially said that they won't be doing it, EA has been rumored to release a PS4/Xbox One rerelease of the original Mass Effect trilogy, If you really wanted to pick these old games up on your Xbox One, they're available through backwards compatibility, but if you're a PS4 gamer than you could be out of luck unless this rerelease happens. And with the deep lore of the Mass Effect universe you're going to want to get caught up on the trilogy before jumping into the new universe.
