Every month Sony and Microsoft release a slew of "free" games on their respective platforms if you are already paying for an online subscription for either company. You don't need the newest console to take part either as both PlayStation Plus and Xbox's Games With Gold offer games on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (and even PlayStation Vita.)
The New Games of PlayStation Plus
Starting Tuesday, August 2nd you can get these upcoming games for free if you have a PlayStation Plus subscription.
- Tricky Towers (PlayStation 4)
- Rebel Galaxy (PlayStation 4)
- Yakuza 5 (PlayStation 3)
- Retro/Grade (PlayStation 3)
- Patapon 3 (PlayStation Vita)
- Ultratron (PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4)
Really a weak month, in my eyes. Though Yakuza 5 is an awesome choice for gamers still on the PlayStation 3 the other games leave a lot to be desired. Tricky Towers is a neat twist on Tetris meets Jenga, but not the sort of game I would play if it wasn't free. And while the space-exploration game Rebel Galaxy seems cool it can't detract from No Man's Sky release just a week away.
The New Games of Xbox's Games With Gold
Starting on August 1st you can look forward to these games on Xbox One and Xbox 360, if you have a Gold subscription on Xbox.
- Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate (Xbox One)
- WWE 2K16 (Xbox One)
- Spelunky (Xbox 360 & Backwards Compatible on Xbox One)
- Beyond Good & Evil HD (Xbox 360 & Backwards Compatible on Xbox One)
Throwing WWE 2K16 into the ring is a strong move, not quite on the level of Sony adding NBA 2K16 to June's roster but a really great decision. And though Spelunky and Beyond Good & Evil HD are older games their inclusion onto Xbox One through backwards compatibility makes them consider giving them a try. And if you haven't played Beyond Good & Evil you're missing out on a true classic from the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube era.
My Winner This Month:
Xbox by a mile. I couldn't see myself turning on my PlayStation for any of Sony's games, but Xbox has some clear winners. Though Spelunky was a PlayStation Plus game in the past. I'm also not a wrestling guy but I can't deny that WWE 2K16 is a big get for Xbox. And like I mentioned, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not trying out Beyond Good & Evil, a game that has had gamers clamoring for a sequel for over a decade.
So if you had to pick up just one subscription service this month I would have to say Xbox. Especially considering the big PlayStation game of the month - No Man's Sky - takes place in an online interconnected world and doesn't even require a PlayStation Plus subscription to enjoy.
Also with this week's release of the new Xbox console, the Xbox One S, you can probably snag yourself an awesome Xbox Live trial if you pick up the new 4K capable console.
Have Your Say!
