Finally, the holidays are upon us! Now that school is just about over with for a few weeks, you'll finally have time to catch up on your reading. What better way to spend the chilly days ahead than curled up on the couch with a blanket and a book?
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
This novella (short novel), published in 1843, has in many ways defined the spirit of Christmas as it exists today. If you haven't read this book yet, you really should; it is a classic, and you'd be surprised just how many other works have used it as inspiration. Where else can you find a combination Christmas story, ghost story, and feel-good redemption tale? Don't just rent the movie - this one is worth the read.
Let it Snow: Three Holiday Romances by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle
This novel is comprised of three separate stories that overlap one another. All the stories center around a massive snowstorm in a small North Carolina town, and all feature some aspect of romance. Reviewers have praised the novel's strong characters and humorous undertones. The stories are charming and optimistic, and would make for a wonderful holiday read! A major motion picture adaptation of this book is in the works, possibly for release in December 2016.
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
Shiver is the first in Stiefvater's The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. It's more of a winter book than a Christmas-themed story, and if you're looking for a little more creepy in your holiday, this is the pick for you! The story revolves around the main character, Grace, who becomes convinced that a wolf is watching over her and protecting her each winter. The book really takes a turn when Grace meets a boy that she believes could, in fact, be her wolf. Are you hooked yet? You'll have to read the whole thing to find out more!
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
If you haven't read this classic, the winter holiday is a great time to do so. It's a funny, heartwarming, and often sad story about one family's struggles and triumphs. The story is sometimes romantic and sometimes heartbreaking, and there really is something in it for everyone. First published in two parts in 1868 and 1869, you'll be surprised at how relevant the characters' stories still are today.
I don't know about you, but this list has inspired me to grab a book, grab my dog, sit on my couch, and spend some quality time with a good book. Happy reading!
