PAX Prime 2013: Convention Report

Sep 05, 2013

This year, PAX Prime went for four whole days instead of the usual three! Luckily, there was lots to see and do at the video game convention. Both Sony and Microsoft showcased new games that were coming out for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Nintendo was also showing off some games that will be out for the holiday season. Additionally, some games were even announced and revealed at PAX!

Familiar Faces in New Places

It's been nine years since the last Pikmin game came out, but Pikmin 3 is well worth the wait! The game features beautiful graphics and two new types of Pikmin. Additionally, there are new characters to meet and a new competitive mode, called Bingo Battle, to try out. Nintendo also brought Pokemon X and Y and PAX attendees had the chance to demo the game through several battles, including one that lets you mega evolve Mewtwo and do serious damage! Not to be outdone, Sonic also has a new game in Sonic Lost World. The game is somewhat similar to Super Mario Galaxy in that Sonic travels between floating worlds that he can walk all over, including under. However, Sonic's trademark sprint and dash is in the game and the action/platforming is very enjoyable, making the game very promising.

New and Exciting

During PAX, Sega revealed a new game that they are publishing for the iOS, called Heroki. Heroki is an interesting hero that flies around wherever you tap on the iOS touchscreen. You can also have Heroki pick up objects and throw them at enemies using Angry Birds-like touch controls. Harmonix also brought a playable version of Fantasia: Music Evolved, which is coming in 2014. The game uses the Xbox One Kinect motion controls and allows you to control and remix songs as you play through the track. The gameplay is very interesting and makes you feel like a music conductor.
