This week on American Idol (Season 12, Week 4), the contestants struggle through sudden death solos and challenging group performances. Read Kidzworld’s recap of “Hollywood Week,” which aired on February 6th, 2013 to discover what you missed.
You've Got Male
Hollywood week kicks off a little bit differently than in the past 11 seasons. Instead of all the contestants arriving at once, only the males showed up. Did the judges give out too many golden tickets or were they trying to help the contestants avoid distraction? I guess we'll never know.
Group Round
The first round - sudden death a cappella solos - allowed the judges to weed out the weak right off the bat. Many early favorites made it through this round. The next round, however, was a different story. As soon as the males arrived in Hollywood, they began forming groups. But just before the infamous group round began, the executive producers threw in another twist. This year, the producers have assigned the groups instead of allowing the contestants to pick, putting together some eclectic combinations, including army Sergeant Trevor Blakney and divas Joel and JDA.
Don't Forget the Lyrics
The males stayed up into the wee hours of the morning rehearsing their songs, which they picked from a list of 20 choices. Some groups, like the Math Heads, wowed the judges with beautiful harmonies, while others - most, in fact - contained members who couldn't remember the lyrics. That included subway singer Frankie Ford who was part of group Oz. He didn't make it beyond this round and left with a dramatic goodbye. His teammates Papa Peachez, Adam Sanders and Charles Allen did make it through.
Tonight, after the final solo round, the judges will eliminate 23 contestants and send the top 20 males to Las Vegas.
