This week on So You Think You Can Dance (Season 9, Episode 12), the Top 8 each performed solos and a routine with an all-star. Read Kidzworld’s recap of the “Top 8 Perform,” which aired on August 29, 2012, to discover what you missed.
The Performances
Witney sported a pair of baggy "diaper pants" while busting out some fierce hip hop moves with all-star Twitch. The judges kept referring to it as “ratchet,” although Witney never seemed to understand the meaning behind that. Luckily, it wasn’t important because she nailed the routine.
Next, Cole and all-star Allison performed a dark Sonya Tayeh contemporary routine about a disturbed girl trying to make a soulless man love her. The judges said that Allison is the best actress they’ve ever had on SYTYCD. Mary thinks this will put Cole in the finale.
Mary thought the only dance style that could stump Eliana would be the Quickstep. Turns out she was wrong! Eliana and her all-star partner Ryan mastered the Quickstep in no time! Eliana is the kind of dancer who can make any boring style exciting just by her stage presence.
Lindsay and all-star Alex performed a jazz number that should have been filled with sexual tension. While their technique was flawless, their emotion and connection was absence from the routine.
Will and all-star Lauren performed a hip hop number that was reminiscent of Twitch and Karington's bed routine because of the way Lauren played a piece of Will’s mind. Will toned down his over-the-top personality for this routine which really allowed his talent to shine.
Cyrus and all-star Melanie (season 8’s winner) teamed up for a quirky jazz number, choreographed by Mandy Moore. The judges commented that he may not be the best dancer in the bunch but his likeability is so strong. They also pointed out that no one in the competition could ever do the kind of dancing he does.
Chehon and all-star Anya shared a special moment during their Tango, according to the judges. There was a connection between the two of them, which is important if dancers really want to sell their performance. Mary called it her favorite piece of the night.
Tiffany and all-star Ade performed a contemporary number that made Tiffany’s movements look effortless. Mary and guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson thought it was her best performance of the season.
Elimination
The bottom two girls was an awkward combination this week - best friends Witney and Lindsay. They said it was like déjà vu being put in this position again. Ultimately, the judges decided to eliminate Lindsay. As for the boys, Will and Cole wound up in the bottom two. Both had fantastic performances this week, but the judges opted to send Will home.
Next week, the judges get to sit back and relax as America decides which two dancers will go home and which four will make it into the finale.
