New York-based indie pop band Fun., made up of lead singer Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff, have recently topped the Billboard charts with their anthemic hit single “We Are Young” featuring Janelle Monae. Find out more in their Kidzworld Bio.
The Format
Lead singer Nate Ruess met the other members of Fun. when he was in another band, The Format. The Format split up in 2008, and Nate immediately had ideas for a new band, and got in touch Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff who he had met while touring with their bands. Fun. was formed and the members got working on new material, practicing and recording in New Jersey. Jack and Andrew provided musical backing while Nate wrote lyrics and took the spot of lead singer. Their first demo song “Benson and Hedges” was made available for Spin magazine readers and piqued music critics’ interest in the group.
Aim and Ignite
Before releasing their debut album Aim and Ignite Fun. made some of their singles available on their MySpace page, creating online buzz about the band. Indie pop lovers everywhere were catching on to their theatrical pop sound mixed with witty yet thoughtful lyrics. When Aim and Ignite was officially released in 2009 the band had gained a solid underground following and were generally praised by critics and went on tour with pop rockers Paramore and signed with record label Fueled by Ramen.
We Are Young
Despite already having a following Fun. truly broke through to mainstream audiences with their hit single “We Are Young” featuring singer Janelle Monae off of their album Some Nights, released in 2011. The song not only reached the top spot on the Billboard charts but was also featured in Glee during their episode “Hold on to Sixteen”.
