Take control of characters new and old as you revisit the universe of Final Fantasy XIII. Get the details in our game review!
For the past several years, Final Fantasy games have picked up a few trends. For better or worse, the games have seen more focus on story and cutscenes. Additionally, we have also been revisiting the universe of past games instead of moving on to the next game and the next number.
Final Fantasy XIII Revisited
Fans of Final Fantasy XIII will be happy to see Square-Enix return to the world of Lightning and her friends. This time around, however, Lightning is trapped guarding the throne of Valhalla and recruits a stranger named Noel to fetch her sister. You get to play as Lightning's sister Serah as she travels through time to find Valhalla. Overall, the story is lighter and more open. There are lots to explore and you can even reset certain time gates and replay the area to fix past mistakes or try something different.
New and Improved
The battle system in Final Fantasy XIII-2 plays out faster and you can now tame a monster to be your ally. This is important, as you can only play as Serah or Noel and the third character in your party is your tamed monster ally. Every time you defeat a monster, you have a chance to tame it. You can level up monsters by feeding it certain items. Auto-battle also returns and is helpful for leveling grinding and for when you just want to get to the next part of the story.
Overall, the improved battle system and open exploration is great. The story isn't as good as it was in Final Fantasy XIII, unfortunately, but Final Fantasy XIII-2 is still a great game and lots of fun.
