E3 2009 Preview: Microsoft

May 29, 2009

Since the major downsizing of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2006, the organizers of the event have been slowly returning the expo to its former glory. This year, many are expecting big and exciting announcements. There have been many rumors flying around regarding various games and hardware advances. As usual, most of the attention has been given to the Big Three: Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony. We will be talking about each company and everybody else over the weekend, so check back everyday!

Microsoft

For Microsoft, most of the talk has been surrounding its hardware. Recently, Microsoft acquire the company 3DV, who specializes in small web-cam technology that detects movements and interaction. This suggests the possibility of a motion sensing controller for the Xbox 360. Currently, Microsoft is the only one of the big three without such technology, since Nintendo has the Wiimotes and Sony has the SIXAXIS.

Microsoft is also lacking a handheld game device while Nintendo has the DS and Sony has the PSP. The existance of a secret project, codename xYz, has recently surfaced. The project details an electronic device that is a mix between the music playing Zune and the game playing Xbox. It will feature Live Anywhere, a version of Xbox Live Arcade. Industry experts think that it is very likely that an official announcement will be made during E3.

On the software side, fans are hoping that Microsoft will be showing off more content for the New Xbox Experience that was a big part of E3 last year. Party games starring the Avatars and a feature similar to PlayStation Home is on the wishlist. As for PrimeTime, 1 vs. 100 is in beta testing right now. It is expected that more shows will be revealed during E3 next week.

Finally, the big hope for a lot of fans has to do with Squaresoft-Enix. Over the last couple of years, Squaresoft-Enix has been getting more and more friendly with Microsoft. Final Fantasy XIII has already been confirmed for 2010 but fans are hoping for more. Getting classic Squaresoft-Enix games on XBLA or Final Fantasy Versus XIII is not very likely, but would be a big bonus for Xbox 360 owners.

Tomorrow...Nintendo!
