If you're one of the thousands of kids who like zipping around with a pair of Heelys - you could be public enemy number one. Malls and schools say the shoe with a wheel is too dangerous. If you don't know what Heelys are, they're those shoes that have a wheel that pops out of the heel so a person can go from walking to rolling in just seconds. Several malls and schools think wearing these shoes can cause accidents and is dangerous so they've banned them.
How lame is that? The same malls that will sell you these shoes, won't let you wear them home. Heelys were designed so you could get where you need to go fast, without having to buy a separate set of footwear. They're a shoe for both transportation and recreation. What if a person's only shoes are Heelys? Are they just not allowed to go the mall? One of the most popular places for kids to hang out is the mall, they should be allowed to wear their favorite shoes there.
And why ban them from school? Who cares if the odd third-grader gets knocked over or some nerdy hall monitor has to jump out of the way? Teachers want kids to get to class on time - so they should be encouraging them to wear shoes that can get them moving faster. If malls or school really think kids wearing Heelys is a problem, they should just put up a sign asking people to slow down or be careful.
There are hundreds of other activities that are more dangerous than bombing around on shoes with a wheel. Worry about the things that really matter - like drug abuse, school violence and a cure for zits - and let people keep on rollin'.
