Whew! The AL won the All Star Game, but it took 15 innings and nearly five long hours to do it. Kidzworld recaps the mid-season classic!
New York, New York
The 79th annual mid-season classic was special for a variety of reasons. For one it was played in the New York City. Second, it was played at Yankees Stadium - one of the most storied and famous stadiums in history. Yankees Stadium will close down at the end of the season to make way for a newer stadium next door. So last night was very emotional. The red carpet parade before the game honored some of the greatest baseball players in the history of the game including Hank Aaron, Willey Mays, Yogi Berra and Reggie Jackson. In all, 49 Hall of Famers graced the red carpet and were honored in a spectacular pre-game ceremony.Recap
Once again the American League proved its dominance of the National League by defeating them for the 12th straight time. But it wasn't as easy as it looked, as the two teams battled back and forth through extra innings, before a sacrifice fly by the AL's Michael Young scored Justin Morneau in the bottom of the 15th inning! Morneau's run gave the AL the 4-3 victory over the NL. The four hour and 50 minute game was the longest ever All Star Game ever! The 15 innings played also tied a record. Both teams combined for 27 hits and left an All Star record of 28 total runners on base! The National League struck first as the AL's Matt Holiday hit a solo home run in the top of the 4th, then a sac fly by Lance Berkman brought in Hanley Ramirez in the top of the 6th giving the NL a 2-0 lead. JD Drew of the AL was able to tie the game with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Miguel Tejada's run in the top of the 8th gave the NL a 3-2 lead, but Evan Longoria's ground rule double drove in Grady Sizemore to tie the game at three a piece in the bottom of the 8th. From there both teams remained scoreless until Morneau's run six innings later!
