If you dig spy stuff, bad guys, high flying action and adventure then youve gotta see Spy Kids 2. See what Kidzworld thought of the gadget-filled movie for the whole family.
In Spy Kids, writer/director Robert Rodriguez creates a film not only with his head, but also with his heart. The first movie is a story of family ties and wacky characters in an imaginary world. It isn't a perfect film, but while the Thumb-Thumbs were fighting Carmen and Juni, Carmen and Juni were fighting like real brothers and sisters. We could dig it.
SPY KIDS 2: The Island of Lost Dreams... not as much diggin' going on. Robert Rodriguez, stuffed this SPY KIDS sequel full of monsters and gadgets, which had us diggin'. But, it's also rushed, busy and cold, lacking that warm-fuzzy family vibe of the original. There are far too many characters in this one, which makes it hard to really get that cozy vibe you had when watching the first one.
Since discovering their inherited spy coolness, being a Spy Kid has turned into big business. Mom and dad Cortez are merely tiny cogs in the machine and Carmen and Juni are just two of the hundreds of Spy Kids in the new program. Mucho minutes are spent on a rivalry with another spy family, and there's lots of cool stuff happening there. Still, very little background about the rivalry is shared.
The special FX are pretty cool and kept me interested, but the villain isn't very menacing... I don't even remember his name! And though some of the FX were way-cool, I don't get why certain things were happening in the flick. Skeletons come to life. COOL! WHY? Carmen and Juni can suddenly hear each others thoughts. COOL! HUH? SPY KIDS 2, The Island of Lost Dreams had its ups and downs, but overall, I'm glad I saw it!
Be sure to stay for the credits, which include a great music video with Carmen (Alexa Vega) doin' a full-out Britney while Juni (Daryl Sabara) struts on his Stratocaster.
