North America's largest and most rippin' skateboard party, featuring the planet's best skaters, arrived in Vancouver, Canada on May 3rd. Here's a look at the most slammin' things about the 2002 Slam City Jam.
Top 10 Slammin' Things About the Slam City Jam
1. Kick-Butt Indoor Skate Park - The guys at Slam City set up a sick indoor skate park for anyone who showed up with a board. The park's ramps, rails and benches made it one of the weekend's most popular hangouts.
2. Big Air - The SCJ Vert competition was the highlight of the Slam City Jam (SCJ). Bucky Lasek took home $15,000 for his best run while Jen O'Brien won the Women's Vert Jam.
3. Sound Stage - No Britney, Backstreet Boys or other lame pop acts on this stage. Skateboard legend, Steve Caballero, and his band, the Faction provided the live soundtrack for the SCJ which also included DJs and beat boxers Killa Kela.
4. Street Course - SCJ's Street Contest was won by Rodil Junion of Brazil - but the crowd favorite was 12 year-old, Ryan Sheckler, who placed fourth with some of the day's slickest runs. Amy Caron won the Girl's Street which had more chicks enter this year than any other year.
5. Fingerboards - The Slam City Jam's fingerboard course provided hours of mindless amusement for fingerboard fanatics who couldn't be bothered to jump on a real skateboard.
6. Freebies - Posters, mags, T-shirts, fingerboards and tons of other cool stuff were given away. There were enough freebies at the show to fill your backpack.
7. First Aid Tent - With hundreds of skaters trying to take things to the next level - lots of people got hurt. The first aid crew treated concussions, road rash, bruised nuts, sprained ankles and just about any other skating injury you can think of.
8. Xbox Video Games - Xbox set up free consoles so jammers could play the latest video games including Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.
9. Skateboard Lounge - The SCJ lounge was more comfortable than your living room. It had couches, a big screen TV showing skateboard videos and pictures of funky skateboard art and photography.
10. Skateboard Hockey - Mike Vallely and a crew of American skaters faced off against Alex Chalmers and a team of Canadians in a wild game of skateboard street hockey. Both sides thought they won but no one really knows for sure.
