You think that song on the Top 20 radio countdown is new but your fave artist may be adding their own touch to an older tune. Here are some cover songs by some of your fave singers.
Have you heard the funky "new" tune by Smash Mouth? The song is called Believer and it's not new but it is a great cover version. The song was a huge hit for The Monkees back in the swingin' 60s. You might be surprised to find out that some of your fave tunes aren't originals. That's how your mom knew the words to that "new" pop song before you did. Here's a look at some cool cover tunes done by some of your faves.Pop Uncovered
The latest Destiny's Child single, Emotion, is a cover of a Bee Gee's classic (those 70s guys with incredibly high voices, bad disco hair and tight pants who sing that Staying Alive song.)Did you know that *NSYNC's Just Got Paid was done before the party hoppin' version you know and love? Johnny Kemp first recorded the tune in the 80s.
Madonna has added her touches to a couple of classic tunes too. American Pie is a cover of a Don McLean tune. Although, Madonna didn't make a never-ending version like Don did in the 70s. She also did a great cover of Fever - another throwback from the 60s, this time originally by Peggy Lee. Tons of other artists have covered this tune over the years as well.
Those zany Barenaked Ladies made a very groovy acoustic version of Lovers In A Dangerous Time, originally by Bruce Cockburn. They did a great job too, cuz the BNL version ended up sounding better than the original.
Britney is covering Joan Jett's I Love Rock 'n Roll on her upcoming release, Britney (release date, November 2001.) She also did her own version of Sonny and Cher's The Beat Goes On.

Lenny Kravitz had a huge hit with his slick version of The Guess Who's American Woman. I love the original but I think he did a great job juicin' it up for a new generation.Pearl Jam also had a big one with their tearjerker, Last Kiss. You probably never heard the original, cuz it was out before you were born, but it was done in the 60s by group called Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers.
Two other great rock covers are Nirvana's The Man Who Sold The World, originally a David Bowie tune, and Gob's version of The Rolling Stones' Paint It Black.
Next time ya catch one of your 'rents singing one of your fave tunes, you'll know they're not doin' it to be cool. It was probably recorded by one of their faves first!
