Many of the songs on the soundtrack were altered versions of the songs from the Broadway musical version of Hairspray.
The album's first single was a new song called Ladies' Choice, performed by Zac Efron.
Ricki Lake, who played Tracy Turnblad in the original Hairspray, sings the song Mama I'm A Big Girl Now with new Tracy Turnblad, Nikki Blonsky.
Green Day recorded their version of the The Simpsons Theme, which was used in the movie, but didn't make it onto the soundtrack.
The album is available in limited-edition doughnut shaped case.
The soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer, who also composed the music for all three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Batman Begins, The Lion King, and dozens of other films.
