Growing up by Australia's famous Gold Coast, it was inevitable that Stephanie would take an interest in surfing. With the encouragement of her dad, she first picked up a board at the age of 10. A natural at the sport, Stephanie spent a lot of the next few years surfing some of Australia's best waves. By the time she was 16, she was the Australian and Quiksilver Under-18 ISA World Junior Champion. She skyrocketed to fame when she won the opening ASP World Tour event at the Gold Coast in 2005. Stephanie Gilmore has been the number one ranked surfer in the world in 2007. She won the Rip Curl Women's Pro in April and in July 2007, Stephanie won the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California. Experts believe that the sky is the limit for young Stephanie. Word is she has the potential to break all sorts of surfing records in her career.
