Barry Zito - Early Years

Barry Zito was a standout pitcher at the University of San Diego High School where he recorded 105 strikeouts his senior year. After brief stints at two colleges, Barry ended up at USC, where he became an All American. Barry was drafted three times - first by the Seattle Mariners in 1996, then by the Texas Rangers in 1998, and finally with the Oakland A's in 1999. The first two times he was drafted, Barry did not sign, but finally signed when the A's used the ninth overall pick on him and gave him a $2.5 million signing bonus. He made his professional debut on July 22, 2000.

Barry Zito - MLB Fame

In Barry's first full season with the A's, he finished the year with 205 strikeouts, which was the fourth best in the American League. The next season was Barry's coming out party as he finished the 2002 season with a 23-5 record and a 2.75 era and 182 strikeouts. He ended up winning the Cy Young Award that season. Barry made the All- Star team in 2002, 2003 and 2006. After the 2006 season, Barry left the A's and hoped across the Bay to sign with the San Francisco Giants for an astronomical $126 million over seven years. The deal was the biggest deal ever for a pitcher.

Barry Zito is not your normal athlete. For starters, Barry enjoys yoga and practices Zen heavily. He also has a huge passion for music. His father composed music for Nat King Cole. He plays the guitar and plans to release an acoustic album in the future. Barry has also done some acting and did a voiceover for the Cartoon Network's show The Ventura Bros. His personal life has also attracted attention. He dated Alyssa Milano and is reportedly currently dating Hilary Duff.
