Another Valentine's Day came and went and I think I managed not to screw it up too much. I made a slideshow of pictures of us from last summer, Halloween, and New Year's Eve and then burned it onto a DVD. I worried she'd think the present was cheap, but she seemed to think it was really sweet.
Vanessa finally came clean about why she's been acting so weird. It turns out her dad - my old ice cream stand boss - is not too happy that she's dating me. Well, he says that he doesn't have anything against me personally, but he just thinks she's too young to date. She's 14. What's wrong with dating when you're 14?! She doesn't know what she wants to do. She says she doesn't like the idea of lying to her parents', but she also really likes me (she really likes me!!!) and thinks they're being ridiculous. I guess I'll just have to wait to hear what she decides. It's not really a decision I can make for her.
Still, I can't help but think there's something I can do to make this better. Maybe I could talk to Vanessa's dad? He scares me a little (okay, a lot) but maybe he would respect me more if I asked him for permission to date her. I don't know - maybe that would just make him angry. Maybe I could ask my mom what she thinks. She's normally pretty bad at giving advice (unless you count "go to your room right now!" as "advice") but she might have some insight into how adults think.
Anyway, since I can't see Vanessa as much as I'd like, I've been thinking about joining some sort of after-school activity to keep me busy. Most of the options seemed seriously lame like chess club and student council (sorry to all you chess playing student councilors). However, after a little digging around, I found out that's there's an outdoor club that goes snowshoeing and hiking and windsurfing (when the weather warms up) and all sorts of stuff, so I think I'm going to join that. I was on the track team last year but that was way too repetitive. I like the idea of doing different stuff every week.
So, are you allowed to date? If not, what age do your parents want you to wait to? And WHY??? .
Later,
Simon
