Feb 16, 2007

The idea of having a hockey puck coming at you at over 100 miles an hour is frightening! So a helmet is a pretty big deal to goalies. In fact, it’s such a big deal that goalies customize everything on the helmet from the fit to the paint job! If you're a goalie, we have the 411 on how to have your helmet look and feel like a pro's!

Goalie Helmets – Fit and Features

Unlike the one-size-fits-all goalie helmets you can find at the local sporting goods store, customized helmets come in a variety of sizes. The last thing a goalie should be worrying about during a game is how uncomfortable their helmet feels. As for protection, you can get a helmet shell that uses the same materials as a bulletproof vest! So if your helmet can stop a bullet, you can bet you're safe from a puck!

Goalie Helmets – Artwork

For decades, hockey goalies have decorated their helmets with creative paint jobs. Having a plain white helmet these days is just inexcusable. Personalizing you helmet makes a statement about you and gives a goalie some individuality. Places such as Pro-Masque specialize in custom paint jobs for goalie helmets. You can email your design ideas and their artist will work with it. But make sure to put some time and thought into this, because custom paint jobs don’t come cheap! A paint job costs between $400 – $800 US!

Goalie Helmets – Some of the Best Designs

  • Former Calgary Flames goalie Mike Vernon wore a helmet that had cool red, white and yellow flames on it. That design was definitely on fire!
  • Hall of Fame goalie Patrick Roy had a tight design of thick snow on high, rocky mountains on his helmet when he was with the Colorado Avalanche. The number 33 (Roy’s number) on the chin was a perfect compliment to this one-of-a-kind design.
  • Ex-Pittsburg Penguins goalie Ken Wregget put a penguin on his helmet. But it wasn’t any ordinary penguin, it was actually the penguin from the movie Batman (Danny Devito’s character)! Wregget wins creative points for this one!
