If you're like most kidz you like to crank up the radio for the latest tunes. Cody Morton likes radio so much that he runs his own radio program called Bust a Groove on CHOO FM in Tofino, BC, Canada. There are a ton of radio shows out there but how many of them are run by 12 year-old boys?
Most guys his age are off playing baseball, video games or hangin' with friends. Of course Cody does normal things too, but Saturday mornings he gets up at 6:00 am, drives two hours to the station with his mom and does a two-hour program. Now that's dedication!
Cody's show is made up of pop and new music. "I play Shaggy, Soul Decision, Nelly Furtado. And I throw in some jokes and really stupid stuff. It's relaxed and laid back," Cody told The Vancouver Province. Cody gets his music off the net cuz it would be too expensive to buy CDs. Besides playing great tunes, Cody's also interviewed some great people on his show like Blue Rodeo, The B.C. Lions football team, Soul Decision, Edwin and even the Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chretien. Now that's something for show and tell! He writes and prepares the scripts at home before warming up at the station. His Bust a Groove show has been on the air for over a year now and shows no signs of slowing down.
One of the major highlights for the grade seven DJ was covering the 2001 Juno Awards show (Canada's answer to the Grammys.) When he discovered he was the youngest person with access to the media room he said, "I'm the youngest person ever?! Whoa! That's really cool. I'm really hyped about it. It's all good." Word on the street is that Cody's a natural and people love him. He was voted the Best DJ in the city of Port Alberni in a reader's poll by the Alberni Valley Times daily newspaper.
He's taken his radio show to the next level with his own Web site
www.bustagrooveonline.com. The site will include online video and radio broadcasting. A word of advice from Cody is to "follow your dreams and they'll come true." He's proof that if you believe in yourself you can make things happen. It looks like Cody has a really bright future ahead and who knows, one day he could be taking over MTV.
