School’s out! Will you be working this summer? A summer job can earn you serious cash to buy the stuff you want (instead of constantly having ask for it), plus it can allow you to save for future expenses like a car and college. It can also look great on a resume and help you gain problem-solving skills you’ll need years down the road. So which jobs are fun and pay well? Check out these 12 picks.
Dog Walker
If you love animals, this is a no-brainer. Clients will hire you to walk their dogs while they’re at work all day. You could work for a local dog-walking agency, for an app like Wag or Rover, or on your own. What a great way to earn money while getting some exercise and fresh air! You may even get to set your own schedule.
Landscaper
If you love the outdoors, chances are you’ll enjoy this job if you don’t mind working up a sweat. Landscapers mow, weed and plant, among other things. You could work as part of a landscaping crew, or mow people’s yards on your own. (You’ll just need access to a mower.)
Tutor
If you ace a certain subject or have an area of expertise (like computer science), you could make great money as a tutor. You could work on your own, for a school, for a tutoring agency, or for another organization that helps people learn computer skills.
Camp Counselor
If you love working with younger kids and think you might want to work with them as part of a career someday, this job could be perfect for you. Supervise campers while spending time outside playing games, making crafts and doing other fun stuff. You’ll earn great leadership and conflict management skills, to boot.
Lifeguard
Are you a strong swimmer? Get certified to be a lifeguard and make great money while hanging out by a pool or beach. Apply to country clubs, athletic clubs, schools, parks, and water parks. Check out your local Red Cross to find out how to get certified.
Caddie
If golf and athletics are your thing, definitely investigate this job. Caddies carry golfers’ equipment for them during matches. There’s a lot of walking and the golf bag can get heavy—but the job can pay quite well. It helps to have good social skills and the gift of gab. Familiarity with golf is a must.
Delivery Driver
If you have your own car and a driver’s license, you could use them to make money delivering pizzas, but also items like groceries too. Check local grocers who use the Instacart app, as well as pizzerias.
Prep Cook
Dream of becoming a chef? You’ll be in heaven washing, cutting, and measuring ingredients in a restaurant. Just be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment.
Barista
If coffee drinks are your thing, pass the time in a coffee shop as a barista, preparing lattes and other drinks. If you have good people skills and like being around others, that’s a plus.
Park Worker
If you snag a job working for a public park, you’ll get to work outside—and earn great money. Positions include gate attendant (who takes your money when you enter the park), a maintenance crew position (keeping the park grounds clean and tidy), and lifeguard, among others.
Movie Theater Worker
Calling all movie buffs—or anyone who loves popcorn or air conditioning—This job is calling your name. You may even be able to watch movies at a discounted rate.
Retail Worker—Selling Stuff You Love
Love bikes? Ice Cream? Clothes? Find a store that fits your personality and apply there. You’ll gain great communication skills interacting with the public, and you’ll get to talk about products you’re passionate about.
When you’re deciding on where to apply for a job, think about your interests, talents, and skills. For example, if you hate the outdoors, a landscaping job probably isn’t for you. Or if you’re a social butterfly, you might gravitate towards jobs in restaurants or stores where you can talk with people every day. A summer job isn’t just about the cash—Although that’s a huge part of it! It’s also about the experience you’ll gain to set you up for future success.
