May 15, 2020Epic Games, the team behind the widely popular game Fortnite are also known for pushing the bar for what is possible for the technology behind some of your favorite games as well. With each iteration of their famous Unreal Engine has led to huge advances in graphics and gameplay, and the newest version the Unreal Engine 5 is our first real look at what the future of gaming looks like.
Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo on PS5
Unreal and PlayStation 5
The demo Epic created to show off the new game engine is stunning, but it is just a tech demo after all. However, Epic has spoken highly of the PlayStation 5 itself saying that:
“The storage architecture on the PS5 is far ahead of anything you can buy on anything on PC for any amount of money right now.”
It is only a matter of time once it gets into the developer's hands that we see the true potential of Unreal 5. In addition to being able to create amazing looking game worlds, it is also easier to make these worlds faster, and with the limits of technology increasing even further with PS5 and Xbox Series X, we are going to see creativity from developers soar in the next few years.
Movies and Games Collide
Computer-generated movies up to this point have been much more demanding on machines, so the idea of using a similar quality for gaming has been a dream. Now, with Unreal 5 developers can take the same art seen in films and use them in games. The heights of realism on this level just hasn’t been possible, but with Unreal 5 and the other engines, other teams will start to work with as the next generation progresses, technology and what doors it opens up for games is only going to get more impressive. Unreal 5 won’t just work on the next-gen systems either, it is also compatible with the PS4 and Xbox One generation but also mobile platforms like iOS and Android.
And Fortnite fans rejoice, the battle royale shooter will be making its way over to the new engine sometime after Unreal 5’s launch. After Xbox’s event that showcased a few next-gen specific games, even though they looked stunning, Epic’s demo raised the bar even further. If this is the first taste of what is possible on these new systems, the state of gaming is only going to get more exciting from here as artists and engineers find out what they can do to bring their visions to life in new and innovative ways.
