Could We See A New Nintendo Switch in 2020?

We could see a more powerful version of Nintendo's latest console.

Jan 09, 2020

The Nintendo Switch took the world by storm when it first launched in March of 2017 and we're nearly 3 years into the lifecycle of the handheld-console hybrid. Despite delighting many gamers both young and old since it's release, it's undeniable that the Switch has lagged behind both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in terms of power. And though we got our first new iteration of the system with the Switch Lite model, rumors are pointing toward 2020 getting another model of the Nintendo Switch that boasts even more power to hopefully bridge the growing gap between the competition.

Switching It Up

Before The main Switch got itself a teeny-tiny update to new models of the system that flew under the radar. While the console and controllers may look exactly the same as previous updates, there's a stronger battery in the system that resolves one of the common complaints surrounding the Switch. Not all of the problems have been fixed, there are plenty of reports concerning Joy-Con drift -- basically an issue that constantly moves your analog stick in a single direction. But fortunately, there was a rumor of a serious update coming to the Switch.

So without any concrete information floating around, you may be wondering why people are so excited about a simple rumor. Back in the days before the Switch Lite was confirmed, there was a report published by The Wall Street Journal that suggested Nintendo would be releasing two new Switch models. One of the upcoming iterations was to be a smaller, more portable version of the Switch which obviously turned out to be the Lite model. This smaller system released alongside The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening back in September in 3 different colors with permanently attached Joy-Con at the sides. So this begs the question, what about the other model in the report?

A Stronger System

Well, the other rumored system is supposedly a stronger version of the current Switch and the timing would be perfect. This year we're going to be getting our hands on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X which will both be notably stronger than the current machines on the market. The Switch already lags a bit behind our current generation consoles, so a "Switch Pro" would be a welcome addition so that Nintendo doesn't fall too far behind the competition. But, as noted, these are all rumors and if this turned out to be true then we'll likely hear about it further into the year. For example, the Switch lite was announced a mere two months before it was officially released so it's fair to assume that a Switch Pro may follow the same path if it's even real at all.

If you're interested in gaming on a console, then 2020 is going to bring you plenty of exciting news. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are both coming in the 2020 holiday season, now we just have to wait and see if a new Nintendo Switch is coming along with it.
