The Most Exciting Video Games of 2020

2020 is a huge year for gaming, and here is what games we are most looking forward to.

Jan 07, 2020

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course

A follow-up expansion to the incredible (and difficult) side-scrolling shooter is arriving this year, in the form of The Delicious Last Course. It might be a DLC, but with the insane attention to detail that Studio MDHR put into the base game, this new set of levels to clear, bosses to beat, and the new playable character “Ms. Chalice,” more Cuphead is easily one of the most exciting new releases this year.

More Cuphead will never be unwelcome.More Cuphead will never be unwelcome.

Gears Tactics

Microsoft is shifting its famous third-person shooter series into high stakes, turn-based strategy in Gears Tactics. Taking inspiration from turn-based classics like XCOM, and combining Gears’ signature level of cinematic storytelling with the high stress but extremely fun gameplay that turn-based games provide, Gears Tactics seems like the result of a match made in gaming heaven.

Marvel's Avengers

This one has quite a bit to prove after a somewhat confusing reveal, but the idea of an Avengers game where you battle and outfit your team of heroes in both single-player and multiplayer missions could be a blast. Games like Destiny have proven how fun blasting and looting can be, and with an all-star cast playing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

More heroes will be added to the game over time, with Ms. Marvel being a huge focus in the story.More heroes will be added to the game over time, with Ms. Marvel being a huge focus in the story.

Minecraft Dungeons

The instantly recognizable graphics of Minecraft could probably be placed into any type of game, but turning Minecraft into a top-down, Action-RPG seems like one of the most effective ways to try something that has been done before but with Minecraft flair. The enemies, the world, the weapons, everything meshes with the new genre seamlessly and it looks like a great time.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy 7, when it released in 1997, was a turning point for Japanese Role-Playing games as a whole. This is the game that many longtime fans look back on as being the title that got them into JRPGs, and they have been begging for a remake ever since. Well, it is finally happening. Instead of tackling just one huge game though, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is simply the first in a new series of games that hope to retell the story of FF7 with new graphics, an all-new fighting system, and more time with some of gaming’s most beloved characters.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Ori and the Blind Forest is arguably the best game that Xbox has produced this generation. From the jaw-dropping visuals, the tight action-platforming gameplay, and the incredible soundtrack propelling the first game into a modern classic, hopes are high for the sequel to somehow deliver an even greater experience. From what we have seen of Will of the Wisps, I do not doubt that they will succeed in doing just that.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

The original LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga is still in the running for best LEGO games ever made, but the formula that those first two LEGO games established have been tried and true for years now. LEGO games have made changes both big and small sense, like the introduction of large, open-world maps to explore, but LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is going to be the biggest shift yet. With an all-new game engine and the ambitious task of adapting all Nine Episodes of the Skywalker Saga in one game, this should prove to be the new standard that all other LEGO games to come will be judged against.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing and portable play have always been a great match, the 3DS games were great fun. But, now we are getting the best of both worlds in New Horizons. Instead of building your place in an established town, you get the task of building a whole town from scratch on an isolated island. There are a ton of new features making their debut in this game, and it is easily the most beautiful looking Animal Crossing to date.

Gods & Monsters

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild changed what open-world games could be, but now Ubisoft looks to try just that. The developers behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey are making a whole new open-world game based around Greek mythology. You can customize your Greek hero and explore a much more colorful and animated world called the Isle of the Blessed.

Next-Gen Games

There is still so much coming that we haven’t seen yet. New consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are set to release late this year and with them a whole slew of next-gen exclusive games. With the huge jump in power that these new systems are looking to bring, who knows what new experiences we’ll be enjoying later this year. We’ll find out more during E3 this year, for sure.
