Stumped on what to give your family and friends? Search no more!
Dec 06, 2019It’s the season for gift-giving! Show your friends and family how special they with a gift they will truly love. There’s nothing better than watching loved ones open a gift you chose for them, especially if you know they’ll appreciate it. What’s the trick to picking presents they’ll love? It doesn’t really matter how expensive they are, so fear not if you are low on cash! Choose things that reflect their personalities. Hopefully these ideas will help you think out of the gift box!
For Mom: Anything That Pampers
Moms like to be stylish, but comfort takes top priority. Any gift that pampers her will be a hit, and you get extra bonus points if it’s also stylish. You can find soft, plush socks at a variety of stores. You may even be able to find some at a dollar store if you don’t have much money to spend. You can also find things like bubble bath, nail polish and nail files inexpensively. Make your gift extra special by arranging socks, bubble bath, lip balm and a candle in a pretty basket or jar (see Mason jar ideas below). Moms love attention to detail.
Essential oils are also popular with many moms right now because you can use them for a variety of things, including relaxation. Some of them can be more on the pricey side, but you can find less expensive ones at stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls and on Amazon.
Coffee, tea and chocolate.
Many moms like at least two out of three of these! Grocery stores and discount stores sell high-quality specialty teas, coffees and chocolates. A $5 or $10 gift card to your mom’s favorite coffee place is always a hit as well.
For Dad: Gadgets and Food.
Does it seem like your dad already has everything he needs? Worry not!
Dads love nifty little gadgets. Places like Walmart, Target and TJ Maxx have lots of these, you just need to know where to look. What types of hobbies does your dad enjoy? Check out the auto accessory section for car gadgets, the sporting goods section for sports gadgets, the outdoor section for tools or camping gadgets--You get the idea. Get him the latest issue of an outdoor or sports magazine, or a year’s subscription if you have more money to spend.
Dads love food.
If you look closely, you’ll notice that your dad has certain “go-to” snacks. What does he like to eat while watching the football game? What barbeque sauce is he always slathering on his steak? Snacks and sauces are a perfect inexpensive option for those dads who don’t seem to need anything. You could dress up dad’s gift by putting his favorite foods in a basket or nice box.
Some other miscellaneous items for dad include pajama pants, a tracker to put on his key ring in case he loses his keys, a tie, or cuff links.
Another tried-and-true favorite for either parent: Give yourself.
A framed photo of you with them will always be a hit. You could also make them coupon books, which cost nothing except for a little bit of time and creativity. Fill their coupon books with “coupons” good for hugs, chores, or anything you think they would love you to do for them.

DIY Mason Jar Gifts: Simple, Creative and Inexpensive
Mason jar gifts work for just about anyone. Fill them with small, practical, inexpensive items that the recipient loves and will use, and you’re done! Don’t forget to decorate your jar with a color-coordinated ribbon and a witty tag. Color your jar with chalk art paint for some pizzazz if you’re feeling extra inspired.
Fill your jar with these popular examples:
- Chocolate lover jar: Different types of specialty chocolates
- Tea aficionado jar: A variety of flavored tea bags
- Teacher jar: Expo marker, Advil, gum, Chapstick, pencils and erasers
- Candy lover jar: Empty a bag of the person’s favorite kind of candy into the jar
- Snack lover jar: White chocolate-covered pretzels
- Smores lover jar: Red and green M&M’s, golden grahams and mini marshmallows. Make a tag that reads “Wishing you s’more holiday joy”
- Baker jar: A cookie cutter, wooden spoon, spatula and maybe a cookie recipe
- Pedicure in a jar: Fill the bottom with cotton balls and add toe clippers, a nail file, nail brush and a couple of nail polishes
- Spa in a jar: Bath bombs, travel-size lotion, small candle, lip balm and a couple of chocolates
When all else fails, remember that the amount of money you spend on someone means less than the thought that goes into your gift. It sounds cliché, but it’s true. Most people, especially parents, would simply love a card or letter expressing how much they mean to you. And isn’t that what the holidays are all about anyway?
