Every year in San Diego the world’s biggest movie and TV stars, comic book authors, illustrators, and fans gather to show off their finest cosplay and tease upcoming films and television shows. This year was no exception, with a plethora of TV teasers and a few movie trailers debuted to the crowds. Read on for a look at some of the newest movie and TV trailers that premiered at the convention!
New Movies
Cats
Love it or hate it, the musical is coming to the big screen. This trailer nearly broke the internet, and stars Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, James Cordon, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, Jason Derulo, Francesca Hayward, and Taylor Swift. You’ll be able to see the movie in theaters December 20th, in the meantime, let us know what you think of the controversial trailer in the comments!
Top Gun: Maverick
More than thirty years after the original took our breath away, Tom Cruise is back as Maverick and he’s… still a Captain? Even without a promotion, Mav is still doing what he does best, pushing the limits of flying. Premiering in June 2020, this should be a fun flick with Tom Cruise also doing what he does best: his own very awesome stunts.
New Television Shows
"Star Trek: Picard"
Coming to CBS All-Access next year, the Trekkies have a lot to look forward to as the journey of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) continues. This show picks up twenty years after the events of the movie Star Trek: Nemesis. From the trailer, it looks like the show will be a combination of returning characters (sure to please long-time fans!) and new characters we’ll grow to love.
"His Dark Materials"
Based on the popular book series (most famously The Golden Compass), His Dark Materials is coming to HBO later this year. Not only does it look AMAZING (how about that polar bear?!) it stars Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, anybody?), Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, and Dafne Keen.
"Batwoman"
Another superhero joins ranking favorites "The Flash," "Supergirl," and "Arrow" at the CW this fall. This trailer doesn’t give much away, but it looks like Batwoman is a trendsetter in the tattoo world, with everyone heeding the call of the bat signal.
Returning Television Shows
"Arrow"
The CW favorite is back for season eight. Oliver has “just one more thing [he’s] gotta do” in the final season of the show, beginning October 15th. It’s going to be epic!
"Supergirl"
While all of society is distracted by technology, Kara seems to be the only person (alien?) paying attention to what is going on in the real world. Supergirl and the rest of the gang return for season five of the CW series on October 6th.
"The Flash"
Barry Allen races back to our TVs on October 8th for season six of the hit the CW show starring Grant Gustin. This time around we’ve got a new villain in Dr. Ramsey Rosso, who wants to put an end to death once and for all and seems to have a personal vendetta against our favorite heroes.
