Did your favorite fighter make the cut?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is almost here, just a month away, and the latest Nintendo Direct focused entirely on the new game and gave us a look at the final roster of characters in the game. Don't worry if you're still missing out on a character you were hoping for because Nintendo also revealed that DLC fighters will be added to the game over time.

The Final Roster

Things started off with an echo fighter of Ryu that any Street Fighter fan could easily predict, Ken Masters. The CG trailer, which as Nintendo frequently points out is not made with actual gameplay footage, starts off with Little Mac from the Punch-Out!! series in a fight with Ken. A blonde haired and red-dressed fighter with similar moves to Ryu, Ken has slightly less power and slightly faster speed to keep feeling a little distinct from his rival Ryu. Also, like Ryu, Ken has two different Final Smashes based on a pair of moves from his series. After Ken takes down Little Mac we get a quick look at a new fighter to represent the Pokémon series.

Fans of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will likely be happy to see Incineroar included in Ultimate. This fighter was perfect to debut in the ring with Ken and show off some of his wrestling-based moves. While Ken was based on Ryu, Incineroar is fully his own character made from the ground up for Smash. His Final Smash is based on his Z Move from the Pokémon games and his character design is far more detailed than anything you'll see in the 3DS games. Both of these characters kicked things off at the start of the Direct, and you can take a look at their reveals below, but there was a limited-time secret shown off toward the end of the video.

An Unexpected Fighter

I doubt anyone expected the Piranha Plant to wind up as a playable character, in fact, when Nintendo first showed it off it appeared like an item. You'll be able to play this character in a range of different colors and make use of a unique moveset that really seems unlike any other fighter in the series so far, which is especially impressive given the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will feature every character from every Smash game in the franchise. There is a bit of a catch with this character though.

Piranha Plant will only be available as a limited-time fighter to players who pick up the game before January 31st, 2019. So you're going to want to make sure you have the game early if you're hoping to unlock him but luckily he'll be free to those early adopters. That's not the end of the characters coming to the game, there will be DLC fighters added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate over the next year for $5.99 USD a piece of you can get access to each of them through the Fighter Pass for $24.99. Each new pack comes with a character, a stage, and a handful of relevant music. You won't have to wait much longer to play the game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate comes to Nintendo Switch on December 7, 2018.
