At the start of each month, Sony and Microsoft release a slew of "free" games on their respective platforms if you are already paying for an online subscription for either company. Up until March 8, 2019, you won't need the newest console to take part as both PlayStation Plus and Xbox's Games With Gold offer games on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (and even PlayStation Vita.)
The New Games of PlayStation Plus
Starting Tuesday, August 7th you can get these upcoming games for free if you have a PlayStation Plus subscription.
- Mafia III (PlayStation 4)
- Dead by Daylight (PlayStation 4)
- Bound by Flame (PlayStation 3)
- Serious Sam 3 (PlayStation 3)
- Drew Slasher (PlayStation Vita)
- Space Hulk (PlayStation Vita)
Here's how PlayStation describes their big games of the month:
"First up, we have Mafia III. Play as Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam vet who comes back home after years of combat. When his surrogate family is wiped out by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family and blazes a path of military-grade revenge through the Mafioso responsible." Mafia III is rated M for Mature by the ESRB.
PlayLink - Knowledge is Power | PS4
"Next we have the 4v1 horror game Dead by Daylight. One player takes on the role of the savage Killer, and the other four players play as Survivors, trying to escape the Killer and avoid being caught, tortured and killed." Dead by Daylight is rated M for Mature by the ESRB.
On top of these games offered above, there is also a pair of extra titles being thrown in over the next few months. First is the PSVR horror title Here They Lie -- which also has an M rating, so be extra wary this month of all the adult titles. We've also got another PlayLink game coming out for those who checked out our review of Frantics, Knowledge is Power is a trivia game that can be played with your phone to answer questions and challenge your friends. Here They Lie is available from August 7th to October 2nd and Knowledge is Power will be available from August 7th to November 6th.
The New Game of Xbox's Games With Gold
Since Wednesday, August 1st you can access the first wave of games on Xbox One and Xbox 360 if you have a Gold subscription on Xbox.
- Forza Horizon 2 Standard – 10th Anniversary Edition(Xbox One)
- Dead Space 3 (Xbox 360 & Backwards Compatible with Xbox One)
The second wave of games begins on Thursday, August 16th.
- For Honor (Xbox One)
- Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two (Xbox 360 & Backwards Compatible with Xbox One)
Xbox - August 2018 Games with Gold
Here's how Xbox described their big games of the month:
Forza Horizon 2 Standard – 10th Anniversary Edition
"Drive over 200 exotic cars and explore the beautiful vistas of southern France and northern Italy like never before, in this 10th anniversary edition of Forza Horizon 2. Show off your driving skills with friends online in challenging races and events, day or night, in dynamic weather conditions. A world of beauty and freedom awaits in this ultimate celebration of speed and style." Rated E for Everyone on the ESRB.
For Honor Standard Edition
"Be prepared to enter the chaos of war in For Honor. Mix speed, strategy, and team-play across several multiplayer modes as you control your favorite warriors, be they bold Knights, brutal Vikings, or deadly Samurai. Master the innovative Art of Battle combat system and guide your armies to ultimate victory." Rated M for Mature by the ESRB.
My Winner This Month:
Once again, Xbox impressed me the most this month especially with their family friend lineup including Forza Horizon 2 and Epic Mickey 2. Though, PlayStation's Knowledge is Power may be worth keeping an eye on.
