The Latest News from Nintendo

Jan 12, 2018

By: Max Cannon

Whether you're playing the latest from Nintendo on a 3DS or Switch, you're likely to have something worth being excited about in your hands this spring. Today's much anticipated Nintendo Direct Mini offered up a slew of games, many of those games being ports. Read on below to see the highlights from the direct!

A New Mario Tennis is Coming to Switch

Mario's trips to the soccer field, baseball diamond, or even Olympic Games have taken him out of his standard side-scrolling adventures and while his parties and go-karting games are definitely the fan favorites, there's a soft spot out there for the Mario Tennis series. We don't have too many specifics but Mario Tennis Aces will be Switch's return to the court with a fancy new story mode alongside it.

No official date is kicking around yet but straight from the mouth of Nintendo themselves, we can expect the new game sometime this coming spring.

Kirby's Next Adventure is Coming Very Soon

Kirby Star Allies is a traditional Kirby adventure that'll be coming exclusively to the Switch. While Kirby games have taken the pink puff into a giant robot or a kingdom of yarn, this new game goes back to the roots of Kirby while bringing cooperative gameplay into the mix. Building on the ideas from Kirby 64: The Crystal ShardsKirby Star Allies focuses on combining Kirby's copy abilities together to try out new moves.

Kirby Star Allies comes to Nintendo Switch on March 16th, right around the corner.

Updates to Already Existing Games

If you're going to be looking for an excuse to return to Nintendo's 2017 games then this Direct should have given you more than enough reason. Super Mario Odyssey is adding free update titled Luigi's Balloon World where players will essentially play hide-and-seek in the already available worlds from the game, it'll release in February with an update that adds costumes and snapshot filters into the game.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: Donkey Kong Reveal Trailer | Ubisoft [US]

The unlikely merging of worlds in Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle throws another character into the mix with a visit from Donkey Kong with a new storyline, you'll need to pick up the season pass or purchase the DLC on its own to try this update though.

Lots and Lots of Ports

If you missed out on any of these games when they first came out, then the Nintendo Switch is giving you another chance to dive on in. The biggest star of the show was Dark Souls Remastered which will come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well as the Switch on May 25th. Gamers that loved, or missed out on, Hyrule Warriors can return on the Switch with Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition later this Spring.

Dark Souls: Remastered - Announcement Trailer

An older game that made use of the DS's initially innovative dual screens, The World Ends With You will please the passionate cult following with the Nintendo Switch version of the game The World Ends With You Final Remix. Finally, the port I may be most excited for is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Switch, a tricky platformer made easier by the inclusion of Funky Kong when it releases on May 4th.
