By: Lynn Barker
In Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, snowman Olaf (voice of Josh Gad) takes reindeer Sven on a mission to gather local holiday traditions when he discovers that Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) don’t seem to have family holiday traditions. Of course this isn’t easy and a mystery tradition will save the day.
Holiday Party Gone Wrong
Anna and Elsa decide to ring Arendelle’s Yule Bell to ring in the season and have the townspeople in for a big party afterwards. The bell ringing goes well but everyone quickly goes home to celebrate their individual family holiday traditions. Elsa and Anna realize they don’t really have any. Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) even has a very weird tradition revolving around a gross troll. The family was apart for so much of their childhood and Elsa feels that it is her fault.
Olaf to the Rescue
Overhearing, Olaf decides to take reindeer Sven and gather up various family holiday traditions from the townspeople bringing the best one home for the girls. He finds that people make candy canes, bake cookies, sing carols, make decorations, hide presents, decorate pine trees, light menorahs, even soak in saunas and more. He gathers all the evidence of these that he can but his sleigh catches on fire and he loses them.
In the Attic
Anna searches in the family attic for traditions. The girls find stuffed toys and a mystery box which Elsa realizes may contain a family tradition after all.
Search for the Snowman
They receive word that Olaf is lost in the woods with wolves tracking him so it’s Elsa, Anna, Sven and Kristoff to the rescue. They finally find him. What does the family mystery box contain? Do the girls have a wonderful holiday tradition after all?
6 Classic Disney Holiday Shorts:
- THE HOCKEY CHAMP - Donald Duck shows his nephews the moves that won him his hockey trophy, but the boys have a few moves of their own
- WINTER - Silly Symphony - In this musical short - the last of the ‘Silly Symphony’ series - see wintertime from the point of view of our favorite woodland creatures.
- THE ART OF SKIING - The first cartoon to use the now-famous Goofy holler, this short features Goofy learning how to ski at the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort.
- PLUTO’S CHRISTMAS TREE - While picking out their Christmas tree, Mickey and Pluto chop down the perfect one, unaware that they’re bringing home Chip and Dale along for the ride.
- ONCE UPON A WINTERTIME - While courting Jenny, Joe tries to show off on the ice, but events soon turn to a timely rescue in this musical December Valentine.
- POLAR TRAPPERS - The first cartoon to feature Donald and Goofy without Mickey; The duo are animal trappers in the South Pole with very different (and hilariously unsuccessful) approaches.
Wrapping Up
Olaf’s Frozen Adventure makes a warm, fuzzy and entertaining addition to any family holiday stocking. Although there is no amazing “Let It Go” song, the ones included are certainly listenable. The 21 minute short had me when I saw adorable kittens in sweaters! The story brings the Anna/Elsa relationship a bit closer as they try to make up for lost time and form or re-discover family traditions.
The classic Disney winter/holiday shorts are all entertaining and very different. We’ve got music plus Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Mickey and more all in winter or holiday-themed cartoons.
The combo makes for great holiday viewing and giving. We go four stars.
