In the need for a scare? Netflix has plenty of options to stream as we approach Halloween. Scary movies and shows like The Nightmare Before Christmas, “Goosebumps” and Twilight are available get in the spirit of the season in the comfort of your couch.
So grab that popcorn and the remote! Here are our picks for what to watch.
Goosebumps (2016)
Dylan Minnette plays a teen who falls for the girl next door. Unfortunately she’s the overprotected daughter of eccentric horror writer R.L. Stine. When he decides to make a move and break into her home to get closer to her, he frees the monsters from Stine’s books. Clowns, werewolves and puppets take over their town for major monster hijinks. Jack Black stars as the fictional version of the very real author of the popular book series and tv show of the 90’s.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s Pumpkin King, pursues a change after getting bored of just dominating Halloween. Looking for something new to inspire him, he stumbles across Christmastown and he gets hit with the idea to take over the winter holiday for Santa. Not quite thinking it through, but committing enthusiastically he’s what happens when two holidays collide.
The Addams Family
They’re mysterious and spooky, meet the Addams family. This beloved film creatively adapts Charles Addams’ immortal characters for a feature length macabre movie. Follow the strange but relatable family in a romantic, funny, and endearing movie about the importance of blood--both figuratively and literally.
All Hallows Eve
A teen tries to summon her mom back from the afterlife but accidentally brings back a witch out for vengeance. The fate of her town lies in her hands in order to protect everyone from the supernatural threat.
Girl vs. Monster
In this Disney Channel original movie, a teen discovers a family secret that unleashes monsters from her basement. Olivia Holt stars.
Corpse Bride
From Tim Burton comes The Corpse Bride. Johnny Depp voices a shy groom-to-be who recites his vows in a graveyard, unwittingly bringing back a bride back from the dead with his words.
Twilight
Bella Swan, an awkward teen girl, falls in love with the mysterious Edward Cullen when he and his family transfer to her high school. Getting close to him begins to unravel the secrets of the Cullen clan and Bella puts herself in danger for their forbidden love.
Scooby-Doo
The live action adaptation of the popular cartoon brings back the Mystery Inc. gang after they have broken apart to solve a mystery on an island that needs them to work together in order to survive. Guardians of the Galaxy Director James Gunn wrote this feature with his signature brand of campy and fun!
Coraline
Henry Selick who directed The Nightmare Before Christmas returned to stop motion for this dark fairytale based on the book by Neil Gaiman. Coraline is an adventurous young girl who travels to a strange dimension that looks a lot like a picture perfect version of her boring home. The more time she spends there, the more she realizes things aren’t exactly as they seem.
My Babysitter’s a Vampire
Ethan and his little sister encounter a young vampire who just so happens to be their babysitter. With their parents out for the night, the siblings face a nightmarish challenge against a danger in teenage form.
TV Shows
“Goosebumps”
If you’ve seen the movie and want to go back to the original, the Fox Kids show is available to binge on Netflix. It’s throwback terror for teens back to the 90’s and filled with after-school special scares which might be considered too intense to have on network shows now. Be sure to watch classic episodes like “The Haunted Mask” and “Night of the Living Dummy (Parts I & II)”. Based on the book series by R.L. Stine.
“The Worst Witch”
In this Netflix original show, a young girl accidentally discovers a school for witches. As she learns more about it’s existence, she grows to feel that it’s someplace she belongs. Based on the books by Jill Murphy.
“The Twilight Zone”
For even more retro creepy fare, check out The Twilight Zone. No, doesn’t have anything to do with vampires but this iconic show is filled with timeless thought provoking and terrifying tales. Episodes that will always hold up include “Eye of the Beholder”, “It’s a Good Life”, “Time Enough at Last” and “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”.
