In The Fate of the Furious, a mysterious, evil woman called Cipher (Charlize Theron) interrupts Dom (Vin Diesel) and his new wife Letty’s (Michelle Rodriguez) honeymoon. She forces Dom to turn rogue and work with her because she has something of his that he would kill for. Can the crew reunite and even work with some enemies from the past in order to bring in their ex-leader before he helps Cipher destroy the world?
Havana Honeymoon
Dom and Letty are honeymooning in Cuba where Dom races a stripped-down old clunker vs. a hot old muscle car to make sure his cousin has new wheels. The race ends in mutual respect for both drivers. Soon after, a hot blonde pretends to have car trouble to lure Dom to her side where she shows him something on her cell phone that makes him agree to help her work toward a world dominance plot and against his own team!
The Furious Reunited
Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) has retired to spend more time with his daughter whose soccer team he coaches and revs up with Samoan war chants. He will have to get the team together to get back a big voltage, stolen EMP (electro-magnetic pulsing device). During the retrieval of the device, it seems evident that Dom has “gone rogue” and is driving against his own team. Dom forces Hobbs off the road and grabs the device. Hobbs is assigned to bring Dom in.
Jail Reunion
In jail (cuz he lost the EMP?) Hobbs is reunited with enemy Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), that special forces assassin Hobbs helped put in jail before. They hate each other bigtime and you know that means they’ll be best bromance buds soon. Petty (Kurt Russell), leader of a covert govt. ops team, wants the two to work together to bring down mega-villain, super hacker Cipher who now has the EMP thanks to Dom. Letty knows her Dom wouldn’t do any of this unless there was an amazingly good reason.
Family Reunion?
While Dom helps Cipher gather up more high tech devices and weapons, his team is given the coolest new cars…and a tricked-out tank to get them back and stop the new evil duo at all costs. We find out why Dom has joined the dark side. Deckard and Hobbs learn to cooperate and, when Cipher starts remote-controlling masses of cars and even a nuclear submarine, it’s up to the new team to stop her and get Dom back to his “family” where he belongs. Of course, many things race, blow up and crash in the process.
Special Extra Features
- The Cuban Spirit covers fun while shooting the street race in Havana. The challenges, the cool old cars etc. are featured. Fun!
- In the Family is a four-part featurette about cast and characters; how the Furious family operates without Dom and Charlize talks about her Cipher character. Actors, director and writer talk about developing the idea of Dom turning rogue.
- The family Shaw is explored. These characters are played by Jason Statham, Luke Evans with Dame Helen Mirren as their mom. Really interesting. There is a section on Mr. Nobody played with verve by Kurt Russell, and his sidekick played by cute Scott Eastwood.
- Car Culture is a three-part extra going into great detail on the fabulous car “stars” of the film and Cipher’s “Zombie” remote controlled cars with hilarious-looking drivers dressed up like front seats so you don’t see them! The Ripsaw, tank and snow cat combo is explored. Very fun for car buffs.
- All About the Stunts is just that…all the car stunt action from Cuba to Iceland and the streets of NYC, exactly how it was done. Interesting.
- Extended Fight Scenes cover more of the Dwayne Johnson/Jason Statham battles in prison and Jason’s fight on the plane with baby in tow.
- Audio Commentary with Director F. Gary Gray is enthusiastic, as he points “out highlights of the movie and some interesting tid-bits.
Wrapping Up
The Fate of the Furious on Blu-ray looks and sounds amazing! The extras are fun and many go in depth at the locations and into car details. Should make fans happy.
The film boasts the usual “Furious” trademarks; exotic locales, impossible stunts, mega-hot cars, a fun “family” vibe among the lead characters etc. There is more of a fantasy James Bond-style element in this film than usual and forget anything being logical. However, the car stunts you come to these films for are there in abundance and the “family” theme for the “Furious team remains. This Blu-ray/DVD/Digital set is certainly worth a buy for fans and gifting. We go four stars.
