The Best Game I Played: March 2017

Mar 31, 2017

By: Max Cannon

A lot of different games flash across my TV, some of them good and some of them are not so good. If you're looking for a great gaming recommendation you are reading the right article. Each and every month I'll give you the update on my favorite game I played over the last 30 or 31 days. Some of these games will be newer releases and some will be ancient games that I dug out of my dusty old cabinet but they'll always be something I'm passionate about.

This month's game is...

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

There aren't many game franchises that I feel immeasurable mountains of nostalgia for. Warm memories abound when I recall the first time I played Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the lifelong friend I made when we shot through Resident Evil 4, and the many cheers and boos from Super Smash Bros.

It took forever to unlock Link's green outfit but it was worth every second. It took forever to unlock Link's green outfit but it was worth every second.

However, and I know I'm not alone, the earliest bricks of foundation were laid down by The Legend of Zelda. The legacy of Nintendo's beloved franchise is well earned but gamers have begun to notice the template of the Zelda franchise -- a template, I would argue, that is often shattered. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took the entire playbook and tossed it out the window.

An Epic Adventure

I would argue that most previous entries in the Zelda franchise were open world games but Breath of the Wild takes any question out of your head: this one of most definitive open world games ever released. In the earlier days of gaming you really had to have your imagination fill in the blanks of Link climbing a mountain, swimming across an ocean, or fighting a massive monster. With Breath of the Wild your adventure will be as thrilling as you could imagine it.

Link starts the game with nearly nothing.Link starts the game with nearly nothing.

Climbing a mountain is truly scaling the sides of a mountain and getting to the peak just before you run out of energy. Fighting a monster could demand a sacrifice of your favorite sword to save your skin. Crossing a field could be part of a horseback chase that only ends safely because you hide behind a tree from a giant monster.

I've always hated the way the word "epic" is used but I cannot deny it, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is truly epic. Zelda gives the Nintendo Switch a launch title on par with Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox and Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64. If you have a Switch, or Wii U, you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing this game.

In a world of awesome open world games and fantastic multiplayer adventures, Nintendo reminds us why The Legend of Zelda is part of the pantheon of excellence. It may have taken 6 years between this game and the last but I'll gladly wait another 6 for a game of this caliber.
