September 2016's Free PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games With Gold

Sep 02, 2016

By: Max Cannon

Every month Sony and Microsoft release a slew of "free" games on their respective platforms if you are already paying for an online subscription for either company. You don't need the newest console to take part either as both [kwlink 30018]PlayStation Plus[/kwlink] and Xbox's Games With Gold offer games on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (and even PlayStation Vita.)

The New Games of PlayStation Plus

Starting Tuesday, September 6th you can get these upcoming games for free if you have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

  • Lords of The Fallen (PlayStation 4)
  • Journey (PlayStation 4)
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (PlayStation 3)
  • Datura (PlayStation 3)
  • Amnesia: Memories (PlayStation Vita)
  • Badland (PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4)

A pretty good month but two things stick out to me concerning the PlayStation 4 games. First off, Journey, one of the best games on the PlayStation 3, may already be in your library. While it's a great game if you already purchased the cheap title for it's original price of 20 dollars on PS3 you should already have the game for free - or maybe you picked it up one of the several times it was discounted. The second game, Lords of The Fallen, is a Dark Souls and Viking melding. However, Lords of The Fallen was recently the free game on Xbox One. Alone, the deal seems stellar but in context to the competition these seem a little stale for PlayStation Plus releases.

In regard of the PlayStation 3 games, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is a fantastic, fantastic, fantastic return to form established by the classic Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Datura was a game that disappointed many upon release but is definitely caught the attention of fans of avant garde gaming.

Also, if you were hoping for Amnesia: Memories to be a portable version of Amnesia: The Dark Descent then you're in for some disappointment, but hey free is free.

The New Games of Xbox's Games With Gold

Starting on Thursday, September 1st you can look forward to the first wave of games on Xbox One and Xbox 360, if you have a Gold subscription on Xbox.

  • Earthlock (Xbox One)
  • Forza Horizon (Xbox 360 & Backwards Compatible on Xbox One)

The second wave of games begins on Friday, September 16th.

  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China (Xbox One)
  • Mirror's Edge (Xbox 360 & Backwards Compatible on Xbox One)

Xbox's lineup is awesome as well, taking some risks and giving you some tested winners. Earthlock hasn't actually been officially released before its Games With Gold release so it's hard to give a full opinion without seeing much of it. Forza Horizon is an excellent choice, especially to get the world excited for Forza Horizon 3's upcoming release. If you can't get your hands on the newest game than you'll be satisfied to play the classic.

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is different than your typical Assassin's Creed game. The Chronicles spin-off moves to a 2.5d perspective and has a relatively short length, making it perfect for a monthly free game. And the original Mirror's Edge, oh my I can shower this game in praise. While I didn't love 2016's reboot, I absolutely loved this game and played through it several times on my PS3, I'll definitely hit it again on my Xbox One.

My Winner This Month:

Once again, Xbox takes the cake for me. PlayStation's offerings, while great if you've never played them, are expected. If you've never played any of thise games I would absolutely pick PlayStation's over Xbox's simply for Journey but I'd be happier replaying Mirror's Edge, personally.

Have Your Say!
