Strings to Singing
Singer Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, who you may know by her stage name Halsey, has been writing songs since she was 17-years-old. As a kid she used to play classical string instruments: the viola, violin and cell! She finally picked up her instrument of choice at 14 - a guitar!
Halsey is of Italian, Hungarian and African-American descent, and was born and grew up in New Jersey and like many of today's stars, got her her start by posting cover song vids to YouTube.
Paying Rent to Recording
When Halsey hit 18 she ran into some financial trouble - the truth was, she was hard-up to pay her rent! She decided music would be a good way to make ends meet and started performing under the name "Halsey" which is both her first name as an anagram, and a street she hung out on in Brooklyn. Her plan was to go to art school one day, but instead she landed a record deal! By 2015 she had released her debut album Badlands.
