A New Sonic Game Is In Development

Sonic The Hedgehog games have not been very well received. Aside from the 2011 release of Sonic Generations, the series hasn't been appreciated since the classic Genesis games of the early 90's. And if the self-aware Twitter page for the Sonic The Hedgehog series is anything to go off of, we can expect a new game to come out this year.

The video, which you can see below, takes a look at the history of Sonic games to celebrate the 25 year anniversary of the character and series. The video ends on 2016 which hints at a release to come later this year. 

Sonic The Hedgehog Turns 25

The video highlights the many different designs Sonic's character has seen over the years. Sonic was originally Sega's mascot back when Sega was creating game consoles and was a direct competitor with Nintendo. After the failures of both the Sega Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast, Sega pulled itself out of the hardware business and focused solely on creating games rather than game consoles. 

The most recent design of Sonic is featured in the Sonic Boom game series and TV Show. The design, though laughed at upon release, accompanied the very well received show. The games... haven't been liked though, however Sonic's marketing team seems to be well aware and that could signal a new direction for the games. Sonic is on the upswing as a character and center of a franchise even if his games aren't doing so well. It's very possible that we could get another redesign that exists alongside the "Sonic Boom" show, especially with the release video giving so much attention to Sonic's designs and logos.

Personally, Sonic was a huge part of my childhood and while I haven't truly loved a Sonic game since the 90's I would be onboard for the return of a character that got me into gaming. Especially if they fix the stumbles of recent games, I could see the character bouncing back.
