Bombs...Lots and lots of Megaton Bombs! That's what I'm expecting to see at this years E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). I'll be flying down to Los Angeles to partake in the madness that is E3 in person this year and boy is it promising to be one heck of an event.
Microsoft, Sony, Ubisoft, EA and of course, Nintendo, will all be vying for fans attention as they try to one up each other all week long with their latest game offerings. Part of the fun of E3 is making bold and crazy predictions before each company goes on stage to reveal the goods and send fans into the hype stratosphere!
I've put together 2 predictions for each of the big three hardware manufacturers, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Some of the predictions are more plausible than others. A couple of them are flat out outlandish but again, that's part of the fun! So without further ado, I present my crazy predictions for E3 2014. Will any of these become a reality? We'll find out next week!
Sony
Prediction #1 - The Last Guardian will finally be shown and have a firm release date.
The Last Guardian was announced in 2009, almost 6 years ago now and has apparently been in development since 2007. From the creators of the critically acclaimed games, ICO and Shadow Of The Colossus, their latest game promised another fantastical journey through a wonderfully dramatic world as you guide a young boy and his giant Griffin like creature to whatever fate awaits them.
The time is now...I can feel it. And if Sony doesn't show The Last Guardian this year, I think it's time to just admit it's not coming so fans can stop clamoring for it. Probability: 50%
UPDATE: It's June 7th, Saturday night. 2 Days before Sony goes on stage at E3 and they have just revealed The Last Guardian has been officially cancelled - source IGN. So I predicted wrong, but at least I got my wish in that they finally just let us know the truth. Let's all share a moment of silence.
UPDATE 2: Playstation's Software Product Development Head for Sony Worldwide Studios, Scott Rohde, has now taken to Twitter to say The Last Guardian has NOT been cancelled. They are playing with our emotions here! The plot thickens. Stay tuned...
Prediction #2 - Sony will show a playable demo of Uncharted 4.
Naughty Dog has been going through a transitional period not only with adapting to the new PS4 hardware, but the lead writer of Uncharted, Amy Hennig, left Naughty Dog earlier this year, taking along with her Uncharted's lead character artist as well. On top of that, they have since recast the lead villain in the game, which no doubt will set production back a little. While Uncharted 4 may be a ways off from release - say 2016 possibly - Sony needs to come out swinging at E3 and give fans just a glimpse of the eye melting beauty of Uncharted running on the new, more powerful PS4 hardware. Probability: 85%
Microsoft
Prediction #1 - Rare and Microsoft Studio's reveal...Banjo-Kazooie 3 (Banjo Threeie).
Rare, the developers of many classic games including Goldeneye (N64), Donkey Kong Country (SNES) and of course Banjo-Kazooie, has been working almost exclusively on Kinect games for the past few years. It's time for Rare to get back into AAA game production and Microsoft needs an epic, beautiful 3D platformer to fill that massive hole in the genre on Xbox. Banjo-Kazooie 3, a true sequel to the N64 classics would be the ultimate game to fill that void as Banjo-Kazooie is regarded as one of the greatest 3D platformers out there. It's time to see this fantastic series return in jaw dropping form! Probability: 30%
Prediction #2 - Halo: Master Chief Collection is real.
There has been rumors that Microsoft has been working on Halo 2 Anniversary to launch in time for it's 10 year anniversary, which is this year. That rumor is not that far fetched as they gave the original Halo the same treatment a couple years ago to critical and fan acclaim. That rumor has since snowballed into a much bigger theory, that Microsoft is actually preparing to release all 4 main entries in the Master Chief story line, Halo 1 through 4, in a drool worthy Xbox One package. All 4 games re-mastered and rebuilt to take advantage of the new hardware.
Microsoft has announced Halo 5 is coming to Xbox One but not until later in 2015. A Halo Master Chief Collection would be the ultimate way for established fans and newcomers to the series to catch up on the lore and action of the series in time for the release of Halo 5. Halo 2 Anniversary Probability: 90% - Master Chief Collection Probability 50%
Nintendo
Prediction #1 - We see the return of a dormant franchise coming to Wii U... Star Fox!
It just feels right. Not only do I expect Nintendo to show a new Metroid and Zelda game, but I'm also hoping to see a much asked for fan favorite, Star Fox. The epic on rails flight game featuring anthropomorphic animals, shooting their way over beautiful landscapes and through asteroid ridden stretches of stars, would send fans into a giddy screaming fit. We haven't seen a proper, original Star Fox game in years...many years...and by golly it's about time this series came back in epic form. Nintendo needs to get more drool worthy exclusives on their console and Star Fox Wii U would be the greatest surprise reveal ever! Probability: 65%
Prediction #2 - Yarn Yoshi is shown in playable form.
Yarn Yoshi was revealed well over a year ago now and we haven't heard much about this new 2.5D side scrolling adventure since. Other than a brief video and a few screen shots, the game has been shrouded in mystery. It's time for Nintendo to pull the wool off our eyes and let the world see this game. I predict not only that we see the game in action for the first time. But it is playable on the show floor and is announced to be coming to Wii U by the end of this year. Probability: 90%
