Based on the beloved best-selling book comes an extremely moving story of a girl who transforms the lives of those around her during World War II, Germany. When her mother can no longer care for her, Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is adopted by a German couple. Although she arrives illiterate, Liesel is encouraged to learn to read by her adoptive father. When the couple then takes in Max (Ben Schnetzer), a Jew hiding from Hitler’s army, Liesel befriends him. Ultimately, words and imagination provide the friends with an escape from the events unfolding around them in this extraordinary, acclaimed film.
The Bottom Line
Adapted from a well-loved novel, The Book Thief blends history with a fascinating coming-of-age tale, and Liesel's struggle to live and to learn to read during World War II will take you on an enotional rollercoaster. The author of the book, Markus Zusak was reportedly very involved in the casting of the film, and we think it really shows. The story is well-acted and involving, and is guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings as you see Liesel go from being a shy, war-traumatised girl to an intelligent and courageous young woman.
Visually The Book Thief features settings and colors that will make you feel as if you are living through the same hopeless experiences as Liesel with the crisp snowy sequences and joyless beiges and browns of the Hubermann home - and the Blu-ray highlights this nicely. Although The Book Thief DVD + Blu-Ray doesn't include a ton of extras, fans of the book and the movie, "A Hidden Truth: Bringing The Book Thief To Life," is a nice bonus feature that shows the behind-the-scenes action for the making of the film. This wonderful story definitely deserves a home in your collection - especially if you're a bookworm or a history nut.
