Inspired by the classic 8-bit retro games of the original Nintendo era, Shovel Knight looks to bring old-school action and charm to the Wii U, 3DS and PC. It's coming from developer Yacht Club Games and you won't have to wait much longer to play it.
Shovel Knight has now been given an official release date of March 31, 2014.
The basic premise is a familiar one. Shovel Knight must travel across the land to defeat an evil enchantress while also saving his beloved. He'll battle a number of key enemies that each feature their own unique stage, just like the Mega Man games. Luckily our hero will have his trusty ShovelBlade, which acts a digging device as well as a weapon to attack enemies.
Not only that, but Shovel Knight can bounce on his ShovelBlade over spikes, enemies and other hazards. A gameplay mechanic that should be very familiar to fans of the game DuckTales, which was originally released on Nintendo Entertainment System in the 80's and recently got an HD Remastered release. Shovel Knight is oozing with nostalgia. Everything from the artwork to the awesome 8-bit retro soundtrack harkens back to a simpler time of gaming. But when I say simpler, I don't mean less difficult. Old-school platformers are known to give a good challenge and Shovel Knight seems poised to deliver just that.
