Dear Dish-it,
How do I put make-up on the right way? I’ve been trying to do it correctly, but it always winds up being too thick or too light. All my friends are good at it and I’m embarrassed to ask them for help.
Clown Face
Dear Clown Face,
There’s no right or wrong way to apply make-up. There are tons of different techniques that offer many different looks. The first step is to determine whether you’re going for a simple, daytime natural look, a smoky night-on-the-town look, or something in between. All you have to do is look up techniques on the internet and you should find lots of step-by-step instruction guides.
Some Tips
Eyeliner can make or break a look. If you apply too much it can make you appear Goth or punk. It’s important to apply it correctly. Using small, short strokes, guide your pencil along the top lid as close to the lash line as you can get. You can smooth this out later using a cue tip. Don’t apply eyeliner to your bottom lid. This can look too harsh, and, depending on your eyeliner, can cause your make-up to run or smudge beneath your eyes.
Mascara
In place of eyeliner, apply a thin layer of black waterproof mascara to your lower lashes to make your eyes pop. Also apply mascara to your upper lashes for a full feminine look. For daytime, use regular black mascara, but for a more dramatic nighttime look, choose something with lash extension.
Blush
Using too much blush can totally destroy a look. You don’t want to look like a clown, as you call yourself. Simply apply a small amount of pink blush on the apples of your cheeks.
Lipstick vs. Lip Gloss
Choosing a lip color depends on your eye make-up. If you’ve created a dark and smoky or colored look with eye shadow, choose a more neutral lip color, either a gloss or a lipstick that enhances rather than changes the natural color of your lips. Going bold with both the eyes and the lips will give you that clownish look again. It’s just too much. However, if you’ve applied a light, natural look to your eyes, you can get away with a bold lipstick. But don’t choose bright red or hot pink unless you’re comfortable with it and it doesn’t clash with your outfit.
