Colin Farrell gets new memories and deep trouble in Total Recall, check out Kidzworlds movie review!
By: Lynn Barker
A factory worker (Colin Farrell) in a grim future world, wakes up to learn that his memory has been replaced, he’s actually a secret agent and his wife is trying to kill him.. and you think you had a confusing day!
Setting the Scene
In the far future, after the Earth is poisoned by some horrific wars, only two safe areas exist. One is called The Colony where the workers live and the other is the United Federation of Britain where the rich folks dwell. Doug Quaid (Colin Farrell) is a bored factory worker from the Colony who assembles police robots. He has a pretty wife Lori (Kate Beckinsale) but Doug longs for more in his life.
Off to Rekall
Doug decides to go to Rekall, a shop that plants memories of cool adventures or vacations in your brain. It’s just like you lived them. You can be anybody and go anywhere. But, the one thing you can’t do is ask the machines to let you experience things you’ve already done in real life. Whoops! When Doug says he’d like to be an adventurous super spy, the machine messes up!
Doug’s Not-So-Excellent Adventure
Suddenly, a bunch of cop robots and real guys bust into Rekall and try to kill Doug. But, turns out, to his total surprise, he goes all action hero Kung Fu on their butts and escapes. Back home, Doug tells his wife about his weird experience and she tries to kill him! Seems he really is a super spy who has ticked off his bosses, she’s working for the Federation and is there to teach him the ultimate lesson.
Doug on the Run
Totally confused and on the run, Doug is rescued by hot Melina (Jessica Biel) who, it turns out, was Doug’s girlfriend in his spy days. He doesn’t remember her. Turns out she is part of the Resistance, fighting for freedom from the big bosses who live in the United Federation. She tells him he’s also a Resistance fighter. Huh?
Confusion, Chases, Chaos and…Victory?
So, is Doug a double agent for the bad guys and spying on the Resistance or is he a Resistance leader? Will fake wife Lori who simply won’t stop chasing him, succeed in killing him and his girl Melina? Will the bad Federation succeed in invading The Colony, wiping out the workers there and replacing them with a robot army? Not if Doug and Melina can help it. Whoever he was in the past, Doug knows who he is now and it’s one of the good guys!
Wrapping Up
Total Recall was a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger way back in 1990 and this is a remake, a totally different one. If you ever rented the original film on video you would see that it has way more humor but way less cool special effects and sets and designs.
The new Total Recall moves really fast, like a video game and that’s pretty awesome to watch but it moves so fast that you don’t get to know the characters very well. Younger moviegoers might get really confused as to who Colin’s character is, who he’s working for etc.
Kate Beckinsale, the vampire heroine of the Underworld movies, can really play a kick-butt baddie to the max and handsome Colin Farrell makes a great action hero. His girlfriend in the movie Jessica Biel is no slouch in the martial arts fighting arena either.
If you love cool Sci-fi futureworlds, great, unique gadgets, (Kate Beckinsale has a phone built right into her hand), flying cars and fast-moving action, you’ll probably really love this movie. I could have used more funny stuff (it’s pretty serious throughout) and more quiet time to get to know and care about the characters but, for a roaring good, videogame-style summer popcorn movie, with amazing special effects, we like Total Recall enough to go four stars. This movie is rated PG-13.
